Mobile networks' speeds faster in the Alps than in southern provinces of Italy
Opensignal analysed Italy’s mobile experience using ISTAT’s Ecological Provinces and found that our users in the Alps on average enjoyed faster download and upload speeds compared to our users in the southern ecological provinces.

As the old saying goes, unity is strength: the newly merged WindTre won 2 awards and secured two additional draws out of a total of 7 national awards, while both of the former Wind and 3 Italia used to lag behind TIM and Vodafone in our previous reports.
Mobile networks in Italy are more resilient in urban areas than in rural during the crisis
As Italy imposed restrictions last month owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, operators have reported a dramatic surge in mobile data usage which has affected the mobile network experience of users across the country. Overall, Italy’s mobile operators have offered a highly resilient service, especially to urban users.
Mobile Experience during the COVID-19 pandemic: 4G Download Speed
Globally, operators report mobile data use is increasing dramatically but Opensignal’s analytics demonstrate that despite these challenges the mobile experience is holding up well. Opensignal has seen only relatively small changes in users’ 4G Download Speeds in some countries, and none at all in other countries.
Declining 4G Download Speeds in quarantined Italy indicate rising mobile congestion
Opensignal observed that our Italian users experienced significantly lower 4G Download Speeds during daytime in the week commencing on Monday, March 9 — following the government’s restrictions imposed on the population on March 10 as part of its response to the coronavirus crisis.
Italians changed behavior and spent more time on WiFi before quarantine extensions
Opensignal observed an increase in the time Italian smartphone users spent connected to Wifi across several provinces, meaning people were spending significantly more time indoors before the government extended restrictions and told Italians to stay at home and avoid all non-essential travel.
The State of Mobile Video Experience 2019
In one year mobile Video Experience has significantly improved in 59% of 100 countries analyzed. But the U.S. is lagging behind on mobile video as carriers face a spectrum crunch.
