Employee Spotlight: Meet Sambodh, an ardent Marvel fan and Market Research Analyst

Welcome back to our employee spotlight series! We are excited to introduce you to the exceptional individuals who make up our diverse and talented team.

In this edition, we have the pleasure of introducing Sambodh, a Market Research Analyst based in Boston, USA.

How did your journey start at Opensignal?

I started working at Opensignal as an intern back in January 2023. I was in my final semester of my Masters degree in Business Analytics from the University of Connecticut when I came across the internship opportunity at Opensignal. It seemed like the perfect fit, where I could apply my previous consulting experience and newfound technical skills.

What were those first few months like?

I remember feeling very welcome and engaged from the beginning. Although my role was remote, I came to the Boston office every other week to meet with the team, and I got the opportunity to work directly with a VP of Client Analytics & Insight. That was an invaluable experience, and I'm grateful for how much he invested in working with me throughout my internship.

Day-to-day, I got to tackle some really interesting projects that aligned perfectly with what I wanted to learn more about. It didn't take long to figure out that Opensignal and this role were a great fit for me, so once I graduated from University in the summer I was really happy to transition to a full time role as a Market Research Analyst.

What does a Market Research Analyst do?

The role is highly data-driven and analytical, as the title suggests. In Client Analytics and Insights our primary focus is examining and analyzing vast amounts of our unique data to derive valuable insights and information that can assist our clients in efficiently growing their businesses.

Is there a particular project you’re most proud of?

One project that stands out is from my time as an intern. Just two months in, I had the opportunity to work with one of our Vice Presidents to create a presentation for the board members of a multi-billion dollar client. This already felt like a great opportunity and responsibility. But then I was also given the chance to present our findings in a meeting with our client. That's definitely something I'm really proud of, and I’m grateful for having the chance to do that, especially as an intern.

What drew you towards a career in analytics?

What got me hooked is variety. The work is never mundane, no two months or projects are the same. Additionally, the field of data science and analytics is constantly evolving. There might be a set way you go about a project this month but in 2 months time it will be a completely different approach and workflow, just because of the nature of the field.

Plus, there's the satisfaction of seeing your work turn into action. Pulling those insights out of our data and presenting it to the client is just the first phase. You then get to see the client take your recommendations and implement actions based on your analysis. That's pretty rewarding.

What do you appreciate most about the culture at Opensignal?

Opensignal is all about openness to new ideas. Sure we've got our ways of doing things, but I feel encouraged to throw new ideas on the table. If I have questions, or run into roadblocks my manager is there to help, but I feel he trusts me to go about my work the way I see best and I really appreciate that. I get to experiment and try out new ideas. Some might work, some might not, but you never know until you try it out.

Also, the people at Opensignal are incredibly friendly and approachable. I'll never forget my first day, when I bumped into Dave Isenberg, our CEO, in the hallway. He just stood up, introduced himself, and we had a chat. That friendliness trickles down to everyone, and I had the same experience with whoever I met, from directors through to fellow interns.

What was the last book you read?

I’m currently reading a book titled ‘Deep Work’ by Cal Newport. It provides some great background and tips on how to be more organized and focused in a distracted world.

If you could meet anyone in the world who would it be?

I'd choose Robert Downey Jr. I'm a huge Marvel fan, and Iron Man is my favorite hero. Beyond the character, I admire him as a person. From what I've seen in interviews and his everyday life, he seems like a genuinely nice guy, and I'd love the opportunity to meet him.

What’s your favorite place in the world?

When I think of happiness, it's sitting in our living room back in New Delhi, having a coffee and chatting with my mom on the couch.

How do you unwind on the weekends?

While I prefer to relax at home in my free time during the week, on weekends, I'm the opposite. I love being outdoors, whether it’s traveling around or playing a round of tennis or my favorite sport, cricket. Whenever I can, I round up a few friends and play cricket for a couple of hours.

I’m also a big fan of cooking. It's my way of unwinding and taking my mind off work. I'm especially proud of my chicken curry and mattar paneer, if my house mates' reviews are anything to go by. I enjoy the whole process – from chopping ingredients to serving up the food. It's all about taking my time, cracking open a beer, and crafting something delicious for everyone to enjoy.
