Employee Spotlight: Meet Rafa, a passionate people person and Account Director

Welcome back to our employee spotlight series! We hope you enjoy getting to know the diverse and unique talent we have the pleasure to work with everyday.

In this post, we get to know Rafa, an Account Director based in Victoria BC, Canada.

Let’s start! What do you do at Opensignal?

As an Account Director, I primarily work with our customers, both new and existing ones. My key responsibility is to ensure our customers are able to make the most of our insights and analytics to improve their business, both strategically and in their day-to-day operations, driving positive change in end user experience.

Have you always worked in the telecom industry?

No, in fact this is my first role in the industry. Prior to Opensignal, I was in the ad tech industry, which had a strong marketing focus. The transition to telecom was eye-opening, especially witnessing the work of our engineers and data scientists as they uncover incredibly powerful insights.

What do you love most about your role?

I love connecting with people. Whether it’s with our customers, understanding their challenges and helping them achieve their goals is really rewarding. Or the team at Opensignal. Since I joined, four years ago, the company has experienced significant growth, becoming a truly global company with employees spanning many continents. Working with colleagues from diverse backgrounds has been a real pleasure, and I'm proud of how we have evolved since coming together as one company in early 2022.

What do you find particularly special about working here?

We stay positive and meet challenges head on, and most importantly, we’re able to laugh. Sometimes things don’t go the way you planned… You come across challenges and life throws curveballs, but I feel that our positive mindset allows us to overcome obstacles and deliver our best.

Looking back at your journey at Opensignal, what are you most proud of?

Despite not having a telecom background, I've managed to foster long-lasting connections with our customers. Our projects often extend over long periods of time, and that gives me the opportunity to really get to know our customers, their businesses and challenges, and work hand-in-hand with them to achieve their goals.

Can you tell me a bit about Opensignal’s mentorship program?

After initially joining the mentorship program as a mentee, I quickly realized its immense value for everyone involved. This led me to sign up as an organizer which brought on a whole new host of valuable experiences. Matching mentors and mentees, ensuring everyone made the most of the program, as well as getting to know team members from around the company has been a truly rewarding journey.

The mentorship program also serves as a new avenue to connect people by bringing together team members from diverse roles and areas of work who may not have had the opportunity to get to know each other.

As a mentee, what was the most valuable lesson you learnt?

I was lucky enough to be paired with our CEO, Dave Isenberg as my mentor. We spent time discussing the strategic view of the business and this helped me understand not only how my role fits into the bigger picture but also how I can adopt a more strategic approach to my work. This allowed me to set clear goals and gain a fresh perspective on my strengths and on myself.

Regarding the company culture, what resonates with you the most?

I appreciate that Opensignal encourages thinking outside the box. Despite our size, we are open to trying new approaches and embracing different perspectives. Our leadership genuinely listens to employees' ideas and fosters an environment where new concepts are welcomed and tested without fear of failure.

After a long day at work, how do you recharge?

I really enjoy spending time with my daughter, whether that’s taking advantage of the summer and going to a playground, or any other activity. It allows me to completely switch off from work and shift my focus entirely on her.

What was your first job?

My first job was in finance. While it wasn't an area I was passionate about building a career in, it taught me valuable lessons about financial planning in my personal life.

If you could have any superpower what would it be?

Reading people’s minds would be cool.

What was the last book you read?

“What Every BODY is Saying” by Joe Navard and Marvin Karlins. It’s written by an ex-FBI
counterintelligence officer and it dives into the topic of body language. I found it really interesting and learned a lot about nonverbal behavior, giving me an entirely new view on how to navigate the world and read people.

What’s your favorite place in the world?

My home, with my family. I’m originally from Brazil and I moved to Victoria, Canada seven years ago. It’s been an incredible journey and while it took some time I have now built a life here, and there's no place I'd rather be.
