Key Findings

Maroc Telecom is the outright winner of Opensignal’s three experiential award categories

Maroc Telecom wins our Video Experience, Voice App Experience and Games Experience awards outright. These are the measures of smartphone users’ experience while streaming videos, using over-the-top (OTT) voice apps and playing multiplayer mobile games, respectively, when connected to a mobile network. The operator's score of 68.1 points (out of 100) on Video Experience places it in the Very Good (65-75) category, while both its rivals — inwi and Orange — place in the Good (55-65) category. In Voice App Experience, Maroc Telecom's score of 75.4 points (out of 100) makes it the only operator to place in the Acceptable category.

Maroc Telecom is the dominant operator in Morocco for mobile experience

Once again, Maroc Telecom has swept away six out of seven awards. The mobile operator is ahead of its market rivals — inwi and Orange — in 4G Coverage Experience, Video Experience, Games Experience, Voice App Experience, Download Speed Experience and Upload Speed Experience. Additionally, Maroc Telecom is now the joint winner of our 4G Availability award.

Maroc Telecom users, on average, enjoy the fastest download and upload speeds in Morocco

The Download Speed Experience using Maroc Telecom's network averaged 34.5 Mbps — our users saw an impressive 16 Mbps (86%) faster download speeds than inwi users and a staggering 17.4 Mbps (102.4%) faster than those on Orange’s network. Maroc Telecom also wins the Upload Speed Experience award, with our users on its network experiencing average speeds of 10.1 Mbps. Upload speeds are becoming increasingly important, as it affects how quickly and conveniently mobile users can share large files, such as photos or videos, to social media services or as email attachments on the go.

All three operators share the 4G Availability award

Maroc Telecom, inwi and Orange are joint winners in 4G Availability, with statistically tied scores of 81%, 82.7% and 81.8%, respectively. 4G Availability is a measure of the proportion of time users spend connected to 4G. These scores mean that users in Morocco are able to connect to a 4G network more than eight out of 10 times on all three operators.

Introduction

Our awards table is essentially unchanged since our last report. Maroc Telecom remains the operator to beat when it comes to mobile experience in Morocco. Maroc Telecom successfully defends six outright award wins. This time, the only difference is that all three national operators jointly win the 4G Availability award compared to inwi’s outright win seen for this category in the last report.

Recently Morocco's National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT), reported a significant growth in mobile internet users — an annual increase of 15.9% to 28.49 million subscribers — with the number of 4G subscribers showing growth of almost 27% to 21.56 million. This proves that the mobile network experience is becoming increasingly important for Morocco.

In this report, we've analyzed Moroccan users’ real-world mobile network experience on the country’s three national operators — inwi, Maroc Telecom and Orange — in the 90 days starting May 1, 2021 and ending July 29, 2021 to see how they measure up.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
