Key Findings

Maroc Telecom wins Opensignal’s first Video Experience award in Morocco

Our users in Morocco enjoyed the best Video Experience on Maroc Telecom’s network. Maroc Telcom comfortably succeeded in winning our award in this category with a score of 65.4 points (out of 100) — a lead of 5.9-6.2 points over inwi and Orange’s score of 59.5 and 59.2 points, respectively. By virtue of these scores, Maroc Telecom places in the Very Good category, while inwi and Orange finish in the Good category. A Very Good Video Experience rating means users enjoyed generally fast loading times and only occasional stalling; however, the experience might have been somewhat inconsistent across users, video providers, and resolutions. On the other hand, a Good rating means relatively longer loading times and users encountered more stops and stutters in video streams, most notably at higher resolutions.

Maroc Telecom has a significant lead when it comes to download and upload speeds

Maroc Telecom wins our Download Speed Experience and Upload Speed Experience awards by spectacular margins. Our Maroc Telecom users enjoyed average download speeds of 25.9 Mbps that were 10.2 Mbps (65.1%) faster than their counterparts on second-placed inwi and 11.7 Mbps (82.3%) faster than those on last-placed Orange. Likewise, the fastest average upload speeds (7.7 Mbps) were also observed by our Maroc Telecom users — 2.3 Mbps and 2.8 Mbps higher than those seen by our inwi and Orange users, respectively.

Morocco’s Games Experience has lots of scope for improvement

Maroc Telecom claims our first Games Experience Award in Morocco with a score of 47.5 points out of 100 and beat the second-placed Orange by a hefty 11.5 points. These scores mean playing multiplayer mobile games over wireless networks remains challenging for our users across all three networks in Morocco and that there is considerable room for improvement for this measure of the mobile experience. Opensignal’s Games Experience is a measure of how mobile users experience real-time multiplayer mobile gaming on an operator’s cellular network.

Maroc Telecom comes top on Voice App Experience

Opensignal's Voice app Experience measures the quality of experience for over-the-top (OTT) voice services — mobile voice apps such as WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook Messenger. Maroc Telecom wins the award outright for this measure of the mobile experience — the operator’s score of 77.3 (on a 100-point scale) beat that of second-placed Orange (72 points) by 5.3 points and inwi’s score (64.8) by a significant 12.6 points. Our users on Maroc Telecom’s network enjoyed an Acceptable Voice App Experience, while their peers on Orange and inwi observed a Poor and a Very Poor Voice App Experience, respectively. This indicates that our Moroccan users’ Voice App Experience varies significantly depending on their choice of network.

inwi sweeps away Opensignal’s 4G Availability award

Our inwi users enjoyed the highest 4G Availability in Morocco. The operator has won our award for this measure outright with an impressive score of 88.3%. This means that our 4G users on inwi’s network, on average, spent 88.3% of their time connected to 4G services. Meanwhile, our users on all three operators’ networks observed 4G Availability scores higher than the 80% mark — 84.8% on Orange and 81.5% on Maroc Telecom. This illustrates that Moroccan 4G networks are moving towards maturity.

Maroc Telecom claims 4G Coverage Experience award

Maroc Telecom scores better in our measure of 4G Coverage Experiencee, which analyzes the locations where customers of a network operator received a 4G signal relative to the locations visited by users of all network operators. Maroc Telekom wins our 4G Coverage Experience award outright with a score of 7 points, while inwi and Orange follow behind with a score of 5.4 points and 4.8 points, respectively.

Introduction

Kingdom of Morocco has emerged as one of the more mature telecom markets in Africa, backed by the government’s Maroc Digital 2020 strategy to promote the development of a digital economy and the National Telecommunications Regulation Agency (ANRT)'s national plan to provide internet (fixed or mobile broadband) access to the entire population by 2022. Currently, Morocco is a mobile-dominant market, with mobile internet accounting for 64.9% of total active broadband connections, making mobile operators the key drivers of economic growth and digital inclusion. In this report, Opensignal has used real-world data to compare our users’ experience on Morocco’s three key operators — inwi, Maroc Telecom and Orange — for a period of 90 days ending January 29, 2021.

Opensignal’s first operator-level report in Morocco shows that one operator dominates this country’s mobile network experience landscape. Maroc Telecom has won six out of seven categories outright — all three of our experiential awards (Video Experience, Games Experience and Voice App Experience), both our speed awards (Download Speed Experience and Upload Speed Experience) and our 4G Coverage Experience award — and each one of them by a healthy margin. The operator only lost the 4G Availability award to inwi but this was by a significant margin (6.8 percentage points). It was noteworthy that Maroc Telecom earned a Very Good rating in Video Experience, and had a considerable lead over its rivals on both Download Speed Experience (65.1%-82.3%) and Upload Speed Experience (43.5%-57.9%).

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
