Our regional analysis assessed how the mobile network experience varies across 13 states and two federal territories of Malaysia. Our results highlight how Malaysia's six network operators, including Yes, stack up on our six primary measures of mobile network experience regionally.
Starting with Video Experience, Maxis has the strongest showing with outright wins in Kelantan, Melaka and Sabah, coupled with joint wins in eight more regions. While U Mobile had the second highest number of outright wins — coming first in Pahang and Perlis, it has only two joint wins to its name this time round. In contrast, DiGi came top only in Negeri Sembilan, but like Maxis tied for first place in eight regions. Interestingly, the only region in which our users reported having a Very Good (65-75) Video Experience was Putrajaya — but only on Maxis and DiGi’s networks. In the majority of the regions we analyzed, our DiGi, Maxis and U Mobile users had at least a Good (55-65) Video Experience. Regional operator Yes trailed behind its national counterparts as our users on its network observed a Fair (40-55) Video Experience in 14 regions and a Poor (under 40) one in Putrajaya.
Moving onto Games Experience, Maxis’ success at the national level is mirrored regionally. In our last report, the operator won outright in three regions — Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor. In addition to successfully defending its awards in these regions, it has picked up three more outright wins — in Johor, Sabah and Sarawak. The operator also picked up eight joint wins. Celcom was the only other operator to secure an outright win — claiming the prize in Terengganu. Our users’ Games Experience placed in the highest observed category — Fair (65-75) in two regions: Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya — on Celcom, DiGi and Maxis’ networks.
U Mobile — the winner of the national Voice App Experience award — racked up the most wins at the regional level for the experience of our users when using voice apps over mobile networks. It wins outright in Kedah, Pahang, Perlis and Terengganu; while also sharing the award with other operators in a further eight regions. Maxis was the only other operator to walk away with outright wins — coming first in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor — and it also tied with DiGi for first place in Putrajaya, and with DiGi, U Mobile and Unifi in Sarawak. However, DiGi racked up seven joint wins and was the operator to have the second highest number of regions where our users had an Acceptable (74-80) Voice App Experience — nine, after U Mobile’s 12.
DiGi still racks up the most number of regional wins for Download Speed Experience, but its haul has shrunk from that seen in our previous report. Last time, the operator won outright in 12 regions and also picked up two joint wins. Now, it is the sole winner in seven regions and a joint winner in a further five. Maxis continues to hold the award in Kuala Lumpur, has also picked up an outright win in Selangor, and doubled its collection of joint wins from two to four. U Mobile was the only other operator to win outright regionally, in Terengganu. Our users saw the fastest regional download speeds — 20.6 Mbps — on Maxis’ network in Kuala Lumpur.
U Mobile still reigns supreme at the regional level in terms of Upload Speed Experience, by virtue of its 12 outright wins (the same number that we saw in our last report), but it now only ties for first place in one region — Putrajaya — down from the two joint wins that it had last time. Maxis was the only other operator to win any awards outright for this measure of the mobile experience, winning in Kuala Lumpur with the highest observed score at the regional level — 10.9 Mbps — and in Selangor.
Yes, largely by virtue of being Malaysia’s sole 4G-only operator, came top for 4G Availability in 13 out of 15 regions. However, Unifi tied for first place with Yes in Sarawak, while Celcom, Maxis and Unifi shared the victory in Putrajaya. Yes users spent 90% or more of their time connected to 4G, in 14 regions while Celcom and Unifi users did the same in eight and seven regions, respectively.
