Key Findings

Vodafone becomes Egypt’s first operator to push past the 80% 4G Availability mark

While Vodafone wins the 4G Availability award, our users across all four networks in Egypt saw noteworthy increases in the amount of time they were able to spend connected to 4G services. Orange, Vodafone and WE’s 4G Availability scores surged by 1.2-1.3 percentage points, and Etisalat’s score grew by an even greater 2.4 percentage points. As a result, Vodafone has surpassed the 80% 4G Availability milestone and won our award outright with a score of 80.9, while Orange, Etisalat and WE were close behind with scores of 78.9%, 76.1% and 74.2%, respectively. This means that our Vodafone 4G users, on average, were able to connect to a 4G service more than eight times out of 10.

WE claims Opensignal’s Download Speed Experience award

Last time around, WE and Orange were deadlocked for our Download Speed Experience award, but now WE wins this category outright with our users’ download speeds averaging 13.5 Mbps on its network. This resulted from a 0.1 Mbps improvement reported by our WE users and a 0.6 Mbps decline reported by their counterparts connected to Orange. However, Orange and Etisalat’s scores were just 0.7-0.9 Mbps lower than WE’s, while Vodafone was further behind with a score of 10.6 Mbps.

Etisalat and Orange jointly win Upload Speed Experience

Once again Etisalat and Orange win our Upload Speed Experience award jointly with statistically tied scores of 5.6 Mbps and 5.4 Mbps, respectively. While our Etisalat and WE users reported a 0.1 Mbps increase, their peers on Vodafone’s network saw the greatest improvement of 0.3 Mbps. In contrast, Orange users observed a decline of 0.1 Mbps.

Orange forces a tie with WE on Video Experience

In our last report, WE won our Video Experience award outright. However, this time round it has been forced to share the top spot with Orange. This is because our users observed a 0.9 point decline in Video Experience on WE’s network, compared to our Orange users who reported an upswing of 0.7 points. That said, our users in Egypt enjoyed a Good Video Experience across all four operators’ networks.

WE accelerates past Vodafone to win the Games Experience award

In our inaugural look at the Egyptian Games Experience at the operator-level in our September 2020 report, Vodafone won the award outright. This time round, however, Vodafone has been relegated to second-place as it has been overtaken by WE. WE leads by a margin of 2.4 points with a score of 43.1 points. Games Experience assesses how the experience when playing multiplayer mobile games is affected by mobile network conditions including latency, packet loss and jitter.

Introduction

In this report, we've analyzed our data gathered in the 90 days ending February 28, 2021, to compare the mobile network experience of Egypt’s four national operators: Etisalat, Orange, Vodafone and WE. As this period includes the introduction of measures to tackle the second wave of COVID-19, it also indicates to what degree the country’s mobile experience has weathered the resulting changes in people’s data consumption habits and locations. Overall, our data shows that the mobile experience in Egypt has been resilient given the challenges everyone faced in 2020.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
