This has probably happened to you before. You are playing a first-person shooter (FPS) but you find yourself losing terribly because you are a few milliseconds behind everyone else. Measuring the Consumer Mobile Experience: Let’s Get the Facts Straight

Posted: Sep 06, 2017

When we founded OpenSignal 7 years ago, we had a very specific goal in mind. We sought an alternative to the old way of measuring mobile network performance. Instead of packing a car full of test gear and then driving around searching for signals, we decided to focus on the consumer. We felt what mattered most to consumers were the actual speeds and availability they experienced on their phones, not some abstract representation of network performance based on test equipment.

Analyzing the impact of unlimited data in the US

Posted: Aug 02, 2017

Last week OpenSignal unveiled a new experimental metric called average peak speed, which is designed to gauge a network’s full data connection capabilities under optimal conditions. We kicked off our analysis of peak speed with a look at India’s four nationwide LTE operators, but in conjunction with OpenSignal’s State of Mobile Networks: USA report, released today, we’re applying our peak speed metric to the U.S. big four.

Introducing OpenSignal's new peak speed metric

Every few years, operators announce some big new network or network enhancement that promises to blow the doors off whatever our current mobile data speeds happen to be at the time. We see press releases proclaiming 300 Mbps, 600 Mbps, even 800 Mbps connections. But when these promised super networks finally arrive, the speeds that filter down to our smartphones and tablets are much slower. How does a 300 Mbps network suddenly produce a 25 Mbps connection?

UK: How fast and how accessible is 4G in your city?

If you had one guess what the fastest 4G city in the U.K. might be, would that guess be Stoke-on-Trent? That’s right, Stoke is more than just the heart of England’s pottery industry. According to OpenSignal’s measurements, Stoke also lays claims to the fastest 4G speeds of any big city in Great Britain.

Whose customers are using Wifi the most in the US?

Though we may be in the era of fast 4G connections, Wifi still plays a significant role in our mobile connectivity. We spend a lot of time connected to Wifi networks at home, work and at public hotspots. But just how much time exactly do we spend on Wifi? I decided to find out by digging down into OpenSignal's U.S. data.

India's fastest LTE connections are in Mumbai

OpenSignal is preparing its first public report for India, but while we crunch our numbers, I thought we'd share a sneak peak at what we're finding in one of the world's most fascinating mobile markets. We compiled our LTE speed and availability tests in India's biggest cities over the previous three months to see how 4G performance compared in different urban regions of the country.

First let's take a look at speed.
