The type of smartphone model affects the quality of mobile network experience that users receive. Newer models, and those with higher user equipment LTE Category support more of the mobile carriers’ network features enabling higher possible speeds. For this reason, smartphone makers create cheaper models with less capable modems and chipsets.

Opensignal analyzed the fluctuations in 4G Download Speeds that our users in the Philippines experienced throughout the day across different regions. We found that, while all users experienced similar speeds at quiet times at night, bigger differences between regions emerged during the day when networks became busy, with our users in Metropolitan Manila — the National Capital Region (NCR) — experiencing significantly faster speeds at congested times.

But South America's largest market still faces a number of challenges as it matures — not least in the vast size of the country and the wide variations in its geography and topology, ranging from large sprawling cities and the mountainous coastal south to the vast forests of the Amazon.

In the second quarter of 2019, our 4G users in Italy on average spent more than four-fifths of their time connected to 4G networks. And whether they were in the North-West or in the South, either in cities or rural areas — they could, on average, connect to 4G networks more than two thirds of the time.

Opensignal observed an impact on our Indonesian users’ experience following the massive electrical blackout which began just before midday on Sunday, August 4, local time. However, the resulting effects on mobile service we measured were not limited to the areas where the power went out — Jakarta and West Java — but spread to the whole of Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi.

In our recent national report we analyzed the network experience of the country’s three main operators — Salt, Sunrise and Swisscom — and found that our users on all three networks experienced 4G Download Speeds over 30 Mbps. But what are these operators doing to differentiate themselves in terms of fast speeds?

In Opensignal’s analysis of 4G Availability in Singapore, our measurements have shown an upward trend in the past 12 months for all three national operators, but the greatest improvement was experienced by our users on StarHub’s network. From the beginning of June, 2018 until the beginning of November, 2018 the operator enhanced its 4G Availability from 82.6% to 87.1% — an outstanding boost of over 4 percentage points.

In our recent analysis, we found that the average 4G Availability in rural Germany was 73.5% experienced by our users, compared with 82.2% in urban areas. In this follow-up insight, we analyzed the range and spread of rural 4G Availability — which is a measure of the proportion of time our users with a 4G device and subscription were able to get a 4G connection — in the more remote parts of the country.
