Key Findings

Claro and Personal share the Voice App Experience award

For the first time Claro has to share the Voice App Experience award. The company had won the Voice App Experience award outright in every report since Opensignal launched the award in November 2019. Claro and Personal have statistically tied scores. Voice App Experience measures the quality of experience for over-the-top (OTT) voice services — mobile voice apps such as WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook Messenger. This time, all three operators placed in the Acceptable (74-80) category, which means that our users were generally able to comprehend without the need for repetition.

Only our Personal users spent more than 90% of their time connected to 4G

Personal is once again the only operator with a 4G Availability score of more than 90%. In fact our Personal users spent 92% of their time connected to 4G or better, while Movistar and Claro scored 84.5% and 80.7%, respectively.

Personal still reigns supreme on speed

Our Personal users continue to see the fastest average download and upload speeds in Argentina. This time around, Personal’s Download Speed Experience score of 23.8 Mbps was 4.8 Mbps (25%) faster than that of second-placed Claro. Turning to Upload Speed Experience, Personal clocked up average speeds of 8.2 Mbps — 1.3 Mbps (19.6%) faster than those reported by our Claro users. Claro placed second with a score of 6.8 Mbps, while Movistar was further behind with a score of 5.7 Mbps.

Claro and Personal again share the Games Experience award

Neither Claro or Personal have been able to break the statistical tie from the last report, and as a result both operators remain joint winners of the Games Experience award. Both winning operators scored 61.4 points on a 100 point scale. Opensignal’s Games Experience measures how mobile users experience real-time multiplayer mobile gaming on an operator’s cellular network. It analyzes how the multiplayer mobile gaming experience is affected by mobile network conditions including latency, packet loss and jitter.

Introduction

Personal still holds the lion’s share of awards. In addition to successfully defending its five outright wins from the last Opensignal report, the operator has also picked up a second joint win, as it has statistically tied with Claro for the Voice App Experience award. As a result, Personal is the only operator in Argentina to win an award outright. Claro has the second best showing with two joint wins to its name — Games Experience and Voice App Experience.

In addition to its impressive performance in this report, Personal has consistently excelled in a number of mobile network experience categories. In all of our reports from December 2016 and onward, our users in Argentina have observed the fastest average download speeds on its network. Personal is also the only winner of both the Video Experience and Upload Speed Experience awards since Opensignal first launched them in Argentina back in the June 2019 report. It has won every 4G Availability award outright since December 2017. Finally, Personal is the only operator to win the 4G Coverage Experience award, since its addition to our Argentina mobile network experience reports in June 2020.

Now 5G is arriving in Argentina the mobile network experience is set to change and improve, as Opensignal has seen with 5G in other countries. Personal launched its 5G network using dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) in Buenos Aires and Rosario (with five sites apiece) in early February.

In this report, we've analyzed the mobile network experience of Argentina’s three national operators — Claro, Movistar and Personal — in the 90 day period starting on August 1, 2021 and ending on October 29, 2021, to see how they measure up. We have used 5G measurements in addition to those from previous generations of mobile network technology when determining the overall scores for each award category.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
