Key Findings

Viettel Mobile claims Vietnam’s first Games Experience award

Viettel Mobile is the winner of our first-ever Games Experience awards in Vietnam. The operator scored 72.3 points out of a possible 100 and beat the second-placed Mobifone by 4.6 points. Vinaphone scored 62.3 and Vietnamobile was way behind with a score of 43.5 points. Opensignal’s Games Experience metric quantifies the experience perceived by users across some of the most popular real-time multiplayer mobile gaming genres such as Battle Royale and MOBA games of which Call of Duty, PUBG, Arena of Valor and Brawl Stars are examples.

Viettel Mobile users enjoy the fastest overall Download Speed Experience

Viettel Mobile became the first operator in Vietnam to have a Download Speed Experience score in excess of 25 Mbps. Our users on Viettel Mobile’s network experienced overall download speeds of 26.5 Mbps, on average — an improvement of 2.5 Mbps since our last report. However, the largest improvement of 4.3 Mbps was observed by their MobiFone counterparts. While Mobifone and Vinaphone were statistically tied for second place with download speeds averaging just below 22 Mbps, Vietnamobile users observed speeds below 5 Mbps.

Viettel Mobile tops Video Experience in Vietnam

Users on three out of four networks in Vietnam — Viettel Mobile, MobiFone and Vinaphone — continue to enjoy a Very Good Video Experience, meaning video streamed to users on these networks exhibited short load times and few interruptions during playback. Viettel won our Video Experience award for the fourth time in a row; its winning score of 72.5 points (on a scale of 0-100) was just about 50% higher than last-placed Vietnamobile, the only operator with a Fair Video Experience rating.

Viettel Mobile breaks through the 90% milestone on 4G Availability

Viettel Mobile became the first operator in Vietnam to exceed the 90% mark for 4G Availability — the proportion of time that our 4G users are connected to 4G services — and won our award with a score of 91%. Our Viettel Mobile and Vietnamobile users have seen their 4G Availability improve by 1.3 percentage points; as a result, Vietnamobile’s score is now 2.6 points shy of the 80% mark. However, our MobiFone users saw the largest improvement in 4G Availability, which rose by 5.8 percentage points to 87.6%. Viettel also won our 4G Coverage Experience award in Vietnam with 8.4 points (on a scale of 0-10). This metric analyzes the locations where customers of a network operator received a 4G signal relative to the locations visited by our users of all network operators.

MobiFone has caught up with Viettel Mobile on Upload Speed Experience

Since the last report, our MobiFone users have seen their average upload speeds improve by 1.2 Mbps. As a consequence, MobiFone and Viettel Mobile statistically tied for the top spot with their users enjoying an Upload Speed Experience of 9.1 Mbps. While Vinaphone followed behind with a score of 7.7 Mbps, Vietnamobile was further down at 1.6 Mbps. Upload speed is becoming increasingly important as consumer mobile habits shift away from mere content consumption to its creation and content sharing on popular social media platforms.

MobiFone has made great strides on the majority of our award metrics

MobiFone may not have won a single award outright, but the operator has plenty to celebrate. Since the last report, six months ago, MobiFone users have seen the largest improvement compared to their counterparts in Download Speed Experience (25%) and 4G Availability (5.5 percentage points), including Upload Speed Experience (15.2%). As a result, MobiFone has now become the closest challenger to Viettel Mobile in five of our award categories, and further ended up in a dead-heat with Viettel Mobile in Upload Speed Experience.

Introduction

In this report we examined the mobile network experience of the four nationwide mobile network operators in Vietnam: MobiFone, Vinaphone, Viettel Mobile and Vietnamobile, over a period of 90 days beginning May 1, 2020, to see how they fared.

Viettel Mobile continues to dominate the mobile network experience landscape in Vietnam. The operator scooped up an impressive six out of seven awards and jointly won the Upload Speed Experience award with MobiFone. Additionally, Viettel Mobile also set new benchmarks on 4G Availability and Download Speed Experience: our users on its network were able to find a 4G connection more than 90% of the time, and observed download speeds above 26 Mbps, on average. Meanwhile, our MobiFone users saw some of the largest improvements across the majority of metrics since our last report six months ago, most notably of 4.3 Mbps or 25% growth in Download Speed Experience followed by 5.8 percentage points in 4G Availability.

This is the first time that Opensignal has assessed how mobile users experience real-time multiplayer mobile gaming at the operator-level in Vietnam. Viettel Mobile is the clear winner, with a score of 72.3 points and a sizeable lead of 4.6 points over second-placed MobiFone.

Measured on a scale of 0-100, Opensignal’s Games Experience metric quantifies the experience when playing real-time multiplayer mobile games on mobile devices connected to servers located around the world. The approach is built on several years of research quantifying the relationship between technical network parameters and the gaming experience as reported by real mobile users. These parameters include a non-linear combination of UDP latency time, jitter, and packet loss. Additionally, it considers multiple genres of multiplayer mobile games to measure the average sensitivity to network conditions. The games tested include some of the most popular real-time multiplayer mobile games such as Call of Duty, PUBG, Arena of Valor and Brawl Stars, played around the world.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
