Key findings

Orange cleans up in speed awards

Orange won both our Download and Upload Speed Experience awards fairly comfortably, with scores at least 13% faster than its closest rival in both categories. Vodafone was notably behind, particularly in our 4G Download Speed measurements, where its score was barely half that of Orange.

A surprise draw between Orange and WE for Video Experience

Orange and WE drew for our Video Experience award — something of a surprise since the Telecom Egypt-owned operator didn't really come close to first place in any of our other categories. All four of Egypt's operators achieved Fair scores in this metric, meaning the mobile Video Experience of our users on their network leaves much to be desired: video load times are sluggish, stalling is common and connections have trouble coping with higher-resolution formats.

Vodafone wins a close-run race in 4G Availability

Vodafone grabbed our 4G Availability award with a score of 66.6% — but Orange and Etisalat were close behind, with less than 4 percentage points separating the three operators. WE was a little way behind the pack, but all four of Egypt's key players had 4G Availability scores within 9 percentage points of the leader.

Vodafone runs away with our Latency Experience award

Vodafone scooped our Latency Experience award with a much more comfortable win than we saw in 4G Availability. The operator's winning score of 45.2ms was a clear 10ms better than closest rival Orange. Interestingly though, Orange had a superior 4G Latency score — but a combination of Vodafone's outstanding 3G Latency and 4G Availability results allowed it to win our Latency Experience crown.

Introduction

In our first look at the Egyptian mobile market, our awards table was roughly split between two operators. Vodafone won our 4G Availability and Latency Experience medals, while Orange proved itself as Egypt's speed king, securing both our Download and Upload Speed Experience awards. However the other two operators weren't entirely excluded, as we saw something of a surprise draw in Video Experience. In our inaugural Egypt Mobile Network Experience Report, we've analysed the mobile experience over 90 days from December 01, 2018 to see how the country's four main operators stack up.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
