Quantifying the real-world experience of 5G E

Posted: Mar 22, 2019

Some AT&T users in the U.S. have recently seen “5G E” appear on the status bar of their existing smartphones, replacing 4G. This move has sparked controversy because AT&T is using updated 4G network technologies to connect these smartphone users, not the new 5G standard.

New Jersey offers the best video experience in the lower 48 US states

A few weeks ago, we examined how the lower-48 states in the U.S. stacked up in terms of overall speed, and we discovered an interesting pattern: The states with fastest download speeds were largely concentrated on the Eastern Seaboard along the Boston-to-D.C. corridor. Today we’re taking another look at our state map, but this time we’re examining the video experience offered in each state. And again, we find a similar pattern.

Strong US TV and video market leads to controversial mobile network prioritization solutions

One of the most controversial practices that mobile operators can be accused of is prioritizing certain types of network traffic over others, or limiting the quality of video which consumers can stream. Operators in the U.S. are often criticized for being heavy-handed in such network management practices compared with other countries, and these attacks often paint the operators as backward compared with the best mobile networks in other parts of the world such as Europe and Asia.

The US may yet catch its global peers in 4G speeds

OpenSignal recently published its State of Mobile Networks report for the U.S., and in it we tracked some significant increases in 4G speed across the country's mobile networks. The most interesting speed results we saw weren't on the national level; rather, they were in big cities. In New York City, Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Cleveland and Kansas City we measured average LTE download speeds of 30 Mbps or greater on Verizon or T-Mobile (in some cases both).

The fastest US tech hub in 4G is also the biggest US city

If you're looking to launch a new wireless startup that depends on fast mobile broadband speeds, then you might want to consider making New York City your new HQ. In an analysis of eight tech hub cities in the U.S., OpenSignal found the Big Apple averaged both the fastest 4G download speeds and the fastest 4G upload speeds.

Explaining the huge gap between fastest and slowest 4G upload speeds in the US

With our summer U.S. report around the corner, we wanted to take the opportunity to highlight a metric that will feature in OpenSignal's U.S. reports going forward. That metric is upload speed, and it's becoming an increasingly important measure of the consumer mobile data experience. When the 4G age dawned, download speed was king as it determined how quickly we could surf the internet and the quality of mobile video.
