Key Findings

The best mobile gaming experience is with Swisscom

Swisscom is now the sole winner of both Games Experience awards. Swisscom retains its outright win for overall Games Experience — an award it has won since its introduction in May 2020 — with a score of 78 points on a 100-point scale. Swisscom is the only operator on the winners’ podium for 5G Games Experience; a change from the previous report, when it was in a three-way statistical tie with Salt and Sunrise. Swisscom wins 5G Games Experience with a score of 89.4 points and all three operators place in the Excellent (85 or above) category.

Salt now shares the 5G Video Experience award with Swisscom

Salt steps onto the 5G Video Experience winners’ podium — Salt and Swisscom now jointly win the award with statistically tied scores of 77.1-77.3 points on a 100-point scale and a lead of around one point over Sunrise. Swisscom’s score has decreased by 1.2 points between reports while Salt’s has remained statistically unchanged, allowing the operator to catch up. Sunrise’s score also fell, by 1.1 points.

Our Swiss users have an Excellent experience when streaming live video

Swisscom wins the Live Video Experience award outright with a score of 62.7 points on a 100-point scale. However, 5G Live Video Experience is shared by all three operators — Swisscom, Salt and Sunrise — with their statistically tied scores of 71.7-72 points. All three Swiss national operators place in the Excellent (58 or above) category for both the 5G and overall awards. Live Video Experience is a new metric that, rather than representing on-demand video streaming (Video Experience), quantifies live video streaming used for current events such as live sports, game streams and concerts.

Swisscom blazes ahead for Coverage Experience

Swisscom is victorious for both coverage experience awards, which are included for the first time in a Swiss mobile network experience report. Swisscom wins Coverage Experience with its score of 9.1 points on a 10-point scale, while Sunrise is 1.4 points behind in second place and Salt brings up the rear. Swisscom is equally ahead of the competition for 5G Coverage Experience, its score of five points putting it 1.4 points ahead of Sunrise.

Swisscom takes home the gold for consistency

Swisscom wins Consistent Quality outright with its score of 84.1%, beating runner-up Salt by 7.9 percentage points. Consistent Quality replaces the Core Consistent Quality and Excellent Consistent Quality awards, both of which Swisscom won in the previous report — Excellent Consistent Quality outright and Core Consistent Quality shared with Salt. Consistent Quality measures if the network is sufficient to support common mobile application requirements at a level that is ‘good enough’ for users to maintain (or complete) various typical demanding tasks on their devices.

Market Overview

Swisscom edges closer to a full house, winning all but one award, either jointly or outright. The operator shares two wins — 5G Live Video Experience and 5G Video Experience — and takes home a further 12 awards by itself. Swisscom retains all four speed awards and adds both new Coverage Experience awards to its tally, along with Consistent Quality and Live Video Experience.

Salt steps onto the winners’ podium for 5G Video Experience, bringing its modest tally up to three shared wins. Sunrise is just behind with two shared wins, as it shares 5G Availability with Salt, and all three operators share 5G Live Video Experience.

The Swiss government is taking steps to improve the resilience of mobile networks during power disruptions. The Federal Council has initiated a consultation on a draft amendment to the Ordinance on Telecommunications Services (OST) to ensure that mobile services remain active in the event of power outages. Operators will need to install emergency power supplies at central locations and base stations, guaranteeing mobile services during outages of up to 72 hours or rolling blackouts over 14 consecutive days. Operators have five years to implement measures ensuring emergency calls, and a further three years to ensure public calls and internet access are available. Implementation plans will need to be submitted by operators within six months of the OTS amendment.

Our results in this report are based on measurements collected across all major mobile operators in Switzerland — Salt, Sunrise and Swisscom — over the period of 90 days between August 1, 2023 and October 29, 2023, to see how they measure up.

Measured on a scale of 0-100, it analyzes how our users’ multiplayer mobile gaming experience is affected by mobile network conditions including latency, packet loss and jitter.

Games Experience quantifies the experience when playing real-time multiplayer mobile games on mobile devices connected to servers located around the world. The approach is built on several years of research quantifying the relationship between technical network parameters and the gaming experience as reported by real mobile users. These parameters include latency (round trip time), jitter (variability of latency) and packet loss (the proportion of data packets that never reach their destination). Additionally, it considers multiple genres of multiplayer mobile games to measure the average sensitivity to network conditions. The games tested include some of the most popular real-time multiplayer mobile games (such as Fortnite, Pro Evolution Soccer and Arena of Valor) played around the world.

Calculating Games Experience starts with measuring the end-to-end experience from users’ devices to internet end-points that host real games. The score is then measured on a scale from 0 to 100.

Typically upload speeds are slower than download speeds, as current mobile broadband technologies focus resources on providing the best possible download speed for users consuming content on their devices. As mobile internet trends move away from downloading content to creating content and supporting real-time communications services, upload speeds are becoming more vital and new technologies are emerging that boost upstream capacity.

The Opensignal Coverage Experience metric measures the extent of mobile networks in the places people live, work and travel. The metric represents the experience users receive as they travel around areas where they would reasonably expect to find coverage.

Traditional coverage metrics typically estimate either a percentage of land area covered, or a percentage of population covered; often neither will be an accurate measurement of the true user expectation and experience. In many markets there are areas where neither population density nor geographic area reflect the importance of coverage to users. For example, in a large mountain range most users will not expect coverage in the wilderness, but poor coverage in the relatively small area of a ski resort is critical for the enjoyment of a holiday. Estimates based purely on population give undue significance to coverage in the most densely populated areas.

Coverage Experience measures geographic coverage of populated areas and therefore more accurately reflects the coverage expectations and experience of typical users. It can give a result that is somewhat different to traditional estimates based on either geographic or population measures. The metric uses a scale from 0 to 10.

Our availability metrics are not a measure of a network’s geographical extent. They won’t tell you whether you are likely to get a signal if you plan to visit a remote rural or nearly uninhabited region. Instead, they measure what proportion of time people have a network connection, in the places they most commonly frequent — something often missed by traditional coverage metrics. Looking at when users have a connection rather than where, provides us with a more precise reflection of the true user experience.

We also keep track of the instances that leave mobile users most frustrated: when there is no signal to connect to at all. The most common dead zones users struggle with occur indoors. As most of our availability data is collected indoors (as that’s where users spend most of their time), we’re particularly astute at detecting areas of zero signal.

Our availability metrics take a user-centric, time-based approach that complements the user-centric and geographical-based methodology used by our reach metrics.

Definitions

Consistent Quality measures if the network is sufficient to support common mobile application requirements at a level that is ‘good enough’ for users to maintain (or complete) various typical tasks on their devices.

We combine different experience indicators such as download speed, upload speed, latency, jitter, packet discard, and time to first byte to calculate Consistent Quality. These components are evaluated against thresholds recommended by various more demanding common applications used for a range of common tasks.

To calculate the metric value, the proportion of tests that pass the requirements of Consistent Quality is multiplied by the test success ratio, which is the proportion of completed tests to all tests conducted. Tests that pass indicate that activities such as video calling, uploading an image to social media, or using smart home applications will be possible without noticeable lag or slowdown.
