Key Findings

Our first Games Experience award in Hong Kong is won by SmarTone

The experience that SmarTone users enjoyed when playing multiplayer mobile games was Good with a score of 76.3 on a 0-100 scale. Both second-placed CMHK and 3's users had a Fair mobile gaming experience. Opensignal's new measure characterizes the experience of playing popular mobile gaming genres like battle royale and MOBA games, of which Fortnite, Garena Freefire and Arena of Valor are examples.

csl users enjoyed the fastest mobile experience, winning both Download and Upload Speed Experience Awards

With a Download Speed Experience of 26.2 Mbps, csl wins the award with speeds over 26% faster than those CMHK and 3 users saw. SmarTone users' download speeds were only a fraction behind 3 and CMHK with a speed of 19.0 Mbps. For sharing media, csl users again win the relevant award, with an upload speed of 8.7 Mbps. However, for Upload Speed Experience, there was a greater difference between the chasing operators, with both 3 and CMHK noticeably ahead of SmarTone

SmarTone just wins the Voice App Experience award, but competition is tight

In Voice App Experience, which measures the typical experience of using voice communication apps like WhatsApp, WeChat or Skype, SmarTone users had a slightly better experience than other Hong Kongers. But there was under 2 points difference between users on each of the four operators, indicating how tight the competition is between them. While users on csl and SmarTone just crept into the Good category, those on CMHK and 3 just miss out and end in the Fair category this time.

3 jointly wins the Video Experience award with csl

With scores in the Very Good category, we see two operators share this award, indicating that mobile Video Experience is not automatically won by the operator that offers its users the fastest file download speeds. 3 ranked third for Download Speed Experience but jumps up in Opensignal's ITU-based measurement of video experience to be joint top. The one hundred point scale characterizes the perceived video quality based on multiple measurements of mobile video streaming including the amount of time video stream playback stalls, the time to start playing, and other technical characteristics of video streaming.

Little separates the operators on 4G Coverage and 4G Availability

There was no significant difference in 4G Availability — the time smartphone users can connect to 4G network — between Hong Kong's four operators. However, on 4G coverage, csl and CMHK users saw a slightly better experience and the two operators jointly win Opensignal's 4G Coverage Experience award.

Introduction

Multiplayer mobile games are becoming ever more important as smartphones become more compelling gaming devices and the mobile network experience becomes more responsive. For the first time in this report, Opensignal looked at how mobile gaming differs across Hong Kong's four operators.

Hong Kong is a highly competitive mobile market and this is apparent in our analysis of the experience of our users on each of Hong Kong's four leading mobile operators that own their own wireless spectrum and mobile network infrastructure.

Each operator won at least one award, although 3 and CMHK have to share their awards this time. SmarTone and csl won two awards outright each but they excel in different areas: SmarTone won two of Opensignal's real-world experiential awards — Games Experience and Voice App Experience — while csl was the speed demon here and won both speed awards as well as three additional joint awards.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
