Key Findings

4G download speeds steadily falling across operators

When Myanmar first launched their 4G networks, the average speeds we saw were inflated by the low amount of traffic, partly influenced by the share of devices being skewed more towards 3G. Combined with the reality of steadily increasing data allowances by operators, it meant that their once-impressive average 4G speeds have taken a hit and are now seeing the effects of network congestion. Our data indirectly reflects the adoption of 4G via our 4G Availability metric, which has seen steady growth over the past few reports, indicating a possible explanation for why three operators saw a decrease in Download Speed Experience. Our first report on Myanmar was published before Mytel was launched, and our users on the three operators at the time saw average 4G speeds higher than 28 Mbps. A year later, we found that these speeds have fallen to 20-26 Mbps, and in this report we see the trend continue. Today, at 26 Mbps, only Ooredoo still offers 4G Download Speeds higher than 20 Mbps.

Narrow draw on Voice App Experience for Ooredoo and Mytel

Our new Voice App Experience metric, which measures users’ experience over voice communication apps such as WhatsApp or Skype, found all four operators placed squarely in the Acceptable call quality range, with just over 3 points separating MPT from Ooredoo. Seeing as Ooredoo is just one point away from the next category, it would come as no surprise to see one or more operators providing a Good Voice App Experience in our next report.

Ooredoo on the verge of Very Good Video Experience

Ooredoo and MPT are the only operators to have increased their Video Experience score since our May report. Although their scores increased by just over 1 point, it’s a much better situation than the one faced by Telenor, who sees its Video Experience score drop by 1.8 points. Mytel, who has not seen a change since the past report, is still enjoying a comfortable 3.8 point lead, although Ooredoo is on the verge of joining Mytel in providing a Very Good Video Experience.

4G Availability increases for all but Ooredoo

Continuing the trend of increasing 4G Availability, Telenor and MPT shot past the 80% mark, while Ooredoo sees theirs decrease by almost 3 percentage points. This now makes Ooredoo the only operator to see less than 80%, in a surprising turn of events since our last report when it ranked second. Meanwhile Mytel further increased their score and is just 0.5 percentage points away from reaching the coveted 95% milestone.

Telenor’s latency slips by 13ms while the others improve

While the other three operators have been making slow but steady progress towards improving their latency, our Telenor users saw their waiting time delayed by an additional 13 milliseconds compared to our last report. This added delay equally affected 3G as well as 4G latencies. Notably, the other three operators improved different aspects of their overall Latency Experience: MPT improved its 3G Latency alone by 6ms, Ooredoo improved both 3G and 4G latencies by around 6ms, while 4G-focused Mytel improved its 4G Latency by almost 2ms. However, these changes were not enough to impact the rankings.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
