U.S. mobile operators are launching 5G networks in a multitude of cities, with urban smartphone users now experiencing some of the fastest real-world mobile download speeds to date to build on the existing state of U.S. mobile experience.

As more operators in more countries launch 5G services, Opensignal has again analyzed the maximum speed that our 5G smartphone users have experienced, updating our previous analysis of 5G maximum speeds. As we expected, the 5G experience is evolving quickly. We already see increases in maximum speeds after just two months.

Opensignal analyzed the fluctuations in 4G Download Speeds that our users in the Philippines experienced throughout the day across different regions. We found that, while all users experienced similar speeds at quiet times at night, bigger differences between regions emerged during the day when networks became busy, with our users in Metropolitan Manila — the National Capital Region (NCR) — experiencing significantly faster speeds at congested times.

It's very common to think that fast download speeds translate to a good mobile video experience, but that’s certainly not the case when we take a deep dive into real-world data. Speed certainly is an indicator of mobile Video Experience but not the only factor to determine the quality of video we see.

In the second quarter of 2019, our 4G users in Italy on average spent more than four-fifths of their time connected to 4G networks. And whether they were in the North-West or in the South, either in cities or rural areas — they could, on average, connect to 4G networks more than two thirds of the time.

Opensignal observed an impact on our Indonesian users’ experience following the massive electrical blackout which began just before midday on Sunday, August 4, local time. However, the resulting effects on mobile service we measured were not limited to the areas where the power went out — Jakarta and West Java — but spread to the whole of Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi.

In Opensignal’s analysis of 4G Availability in Singapore, our measurements have shown an upward trend in the past 12 months for all three national operators, but the greatest improvement was experienced by our users on StarHub’s network. From the beginning of June, 2018 until the beginning of November, 2018 the operator enhanced its 4G Availability from 82.6% to 87.1% — an outstanding boost of over 4 percentage points.
