Philippines mobile Video Experience: a big gap between operators

Opensignal’s latest report on the Philippines has highlighted how Smart closed the 4G Availability gap with the other incumbent, Globe. Smart and Globe tied for our 4G Availability award, both with scores passing the 70% mark, meaning our users with a 4G device and subscription were able to connect to an LTE network in 7 out of 10 attempts. But did that also mean smartphone users could enjoy seamless mobile experiences, regardless of their network provider? Well, not really.

Of all of the global regions we analyzed in our State of Mobile Video report, East Asia definitely had the most diverse results. The western edge of the Pacific is home to countries that scored among the highest in our video experience rankings. It's also home to some countries that ranked among the lowest.

We've seen a lot of 4G progress in the Philippines since our first State of Mobile Networks report for the region came out in March of 2017, but we thought it would be interesting to take a closer look at the Philippines' gains by tracking the month-to-month changes in average overall download speed for Globe and Smart over the last year. Why overall speed, you might ask? Overall speed takes into account multiple OpenSignal metrics.
