Opensignal's recent State of Mobile Network Experience report ranked 87 of the world's mobile nations across our key metrics, with the usual suspects – Canada, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, and South Korea – topping our global rankings. But how did mobile-first markets in Africa stack up against each other? We compared 10 mobile markets from the continent — and the winners weren't necessarily who you would expect. 

Opensignal analyzed 4G Download Speeds experienced by our users in Australia’s two most populous cities — Melbourne and Sydney. We noticed a consistent trend in both cities: our users on all three of the country's main networks — Optus, Telstra, and Vodafone — experienced a wide range of 4G Download Speeds during different hours of the day likely due to congestion, with download speeds decreasing through the day.

The city of Chihuahua has quite the namesake. It lends its name not only to the famous breed of miniature dog known for its outsized bark but also to the popular semi-soft cheese that originates from the surrounding dairyland. According to Opensignal's latest analysis of the 20 of the largest cities in Mexico, though, Chihuahua could just as well be synonymous with fast mobile broadband speeds. The city topped our chart in Download Speed Experience and was among the fastest in Upload Speed Experience.

As the summer months get into full swing, families across the U.S. are planning their balmy-weather vacations. And regardless of whether you are a seasoned or casual holiday traveller, the smartphone has become a critical tool on any journey to a new locale. The mobile internet helps us plan activities and make reservations. Navigation apps help us find our way from the hotel to points of interest. Our camera phones have replaced the point-and-shooters that were once mainstays on any trip.

5G is here, but how fast is it? In the first country to see widespread 5G adoption, South Korea, Opensignal’s analytics reveals the average download speed of 5G smartphone owners is 111.8 Mbps or 48% faster than users with comparable recent 4G flagship smartphones¹ and 134% higher than other 4G smartphone users. These metrics will likely improve as 5G becomes more mainstream and the early 5G technology matures over the coming months.
