Ooredoo is the first operator in Kuwait to win the 5G Download Speed Award, with a score of 337.4 Mbps, and a lead of 51.7 Mbps on the runner-up. Zain places second with a score of 285.7 Mbps, while stc comes third with a score of 170.8 Mbps.

Ooredoo and Zain share the 5G Games Experience award

The first 5G Games Experience award is a shared victory between Ooredoo and Zain, as the two operators had statistically tied scores of 75.5 and 72.4 points, respectively. Kuwait’s remaining operator — stc — comes third with a score of 67.8 points.

5G users in Kuwait have a similar 5G Availability on all three operators

Ooredoo, stc and Zain are joint winners of the 5G Availability award, which means that our users spent a statistically similar amount of time connected to 5G on their networks. 5G Availability represents the proportion of time Opensignal users with a 5G device and subscription had an active 5G connection.

Kuwaiti 5G users enjoy a Good 5G Voice App Experience

Our Kuwaiti users enjoyed a similar 5G Voice App Experience on Ooredoo, stc and Zain, as the three operators had statistically tied scores of 81.9, 81.4 and 82.2 points on a 100 point scale, respectively. This means that all three operators placed in the Good category (80<87) for 5G Voice App Experience.

Users had their best 5G mobile video streaming experience on stc and Zain’s networks

Zain and stc are the first Kuwaiti operators to win the 5G Video Experience award — with statistically tied scores of 81.5 and 79.6 points, respectively. Ooredoo follows in third place with a score of 56.2 points on a 100 point scale. 5G Video Experience quantifies the quality of video streamed to mobile devices by measuring real-world video streams over an operator's 5G network.

Introduction

Our first look at the 5G experience in Kuwait reveals fierce competition, with five out of six awards shared between two or more operators. Ooredoo stands out from its competitors as it is the only operator to earn a sole victory in 5G Download Speed while sharing all the other awards except for 5G Video Experience. Zain is a joint winner in all categories except for 5G Download Speed, while stc shares the top spot with one or both its rivals in three categories — 5G Video Experience, 5G Voice App Experience and 5G Availability.

Kuwaiti operators launched their 5G networks in summer of 2019 using the 3.5 GHz band, and we have seen the country appear among the top markets for 5G mobile experience in many of our international benchmarking analyses. In our most recent analysis, Kuwait shared the top position with South Korea in 5G Availability and featured among the top 15 markets for 5G Download Speed, highlighting how the operators’ efforts in deploying 5G are positioning the country among the international 5G leaders.

In this report, we’ve analyzed the 5G experience of our Kuwaiti users across all three national operators — Ooredoo, stc and Zain — over the 90 day period starting October 1, 2021 and ending December 29, 2021.

We have also published a companion report — which analyzes the overall mobile experience of our Kuwaiti users weighted by the amount of time they spent connected to each mobile technology.

National Analysis

5G Video Experience

Zain and stc are the inaugural joint winners of the 5G Video Experience award in Kuwait, with statistically tied scores of 81.5 and 79.6 points, respectively. Ooredoo places third with a score of 56.2 points on a 100 point scale.

5G Video Experience quantifies the quality of video streamed to mobile devices by measuring real-world video streams over an operator's 5G network. It is derived from an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approach. To calculate video experience, we are directly measuring video streams from end-user devices and using this ITU approach to quantify the overall video experience for each operator on a scale from 0 to 100. The videos tested include a mixture of resolutions and are streamed directly from the world’s largest video content providers.

5G Games Experience

Ooredoo and Zain share the first 5G Games Experience award with statistically tied scores of 75.5 and 72.4 points, respectively. Kuwait’s remaining operator — stc — scored 67.8 points.

5G Games Experience measures how mobile users experience real-time multiplayer mobile gaming on an operator’s 5G network. Measured on a scale of 0-100, it analyzes how the multiplayer mobile gaming experience is affected by mobile network conditions including latency, packet loss and jitter. Additionally, it considers multiple genres of multiplayer mobile games to measure the average sensitivity to network conditions. The games tested include some of the most popular real-time multiplayer mobile games (such as Fortnite, Pro Evolution Soccer and Arena of Valor) played around the world.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
