2degrees wins Consistent Quality outright

2degrees is in first place for Consistent Quality with a score of 82.2%, beating Spark by 1.3 percentage points. These scores represent the percentage of users’ tests that have met the minimum recommended performance thresholds to watch HD video, complete group video conference calls and play games.

Our users enjoy the most reliable services on 2degrees’ network

2degrees wins the Reliability Experience report with a score of 650 points on a 100-1000 scale. Opensignal’s Broadband Reliability Experience metric measures the entire user experience, from establishing a connection to successfully completing tasks like streaming video, browsing the web, and scrolling through social media.

2degrees triumphs for both Download Speed and Upload Speed

Our users see the fastest speeds on 2degrees’ network, as the ISP takes the top spot for both Download Speed and Upload Speed with scores clocking in at 111.9Mbps and 40.6Mbps, respectively. 2degrees also jointly wins Peak Download Speed, alongside One.

Market Overview

In this report Opensignal has, for the first time, examined real-world data from our New Zealand fixed broadband users. To reflect the varying ways in which fixed broadband is used we include six different measures of user experience: Consistent Quality, Download Speed, Peak Download Speed, Upload Speed, Video Experience, and Reliability Experience. Together, these measures capture the wide range of ways that households use broadband services, ranging from remote work and education to video streaming and gaming.

We include the four main internet service providers operating in New Zealand – 2degrees, One, Spark, and Starlink. The analysis period covers their performance over 90 days starting on April 11, 2024, to see how these Kiwi ISPs fared. We also included ISPs scores in two of New Zealand’s most populated cities — Auckland and Christchurch.

New Zealand’s three mobile network operators — 2degrees, One and Spark — control three-quarters of the fixed broadband market, with their xDSL, fiber, and FWA offerings — and also cable in the case of One. The incumbent telecoms provider Spark is the fixed broadband market leader, holding more than a third of the market. 2degrees has the second largest market share, of more than 20% — which includes Orcon and Slingshot subscribers. However, Opensignal does not account for these brands in 2degrees’ scores, as they still operate under their own names. One New Zealand — formerly known as Vodafone New Zealand before rebranding in 2023 — has nearly 20% of the market share.

Fiber providers like Mercury, Sky Broadband or Contact Energy (an energy provider that offers broadband services underpinned by the wholesaler Devoli) are some of the market disruptors that are gaining more subscribers in the New Zealand fixed broadband market. They are not included in our report due to low market share. In addition — New Zealanders living in remote areas now have access to Starlink satellite services, which we include in our report.

Broadband Consistent Quality measures how often a network, from the perspective of a single device once connectivity is established, meets the requirements for common applications. Broadband Consistent Quality uses six key performance indicators: download and upload speeds, latency, jitter, packet loss, and time to first byte, setting thresholds appropriate for individual rather than multiple device usage. Metrics represent the percentage of users’ tests meeting these performance thresholds to support activities like watching HD video, completing group video calls, and gaming across all hours of the day.

Measured in Mbps, Broadband Download Speed represents the typical everyday speeds a user experiences across a provider’s network.

Definitions

Measured in Mbps, Broadband Peak Download Speed represents the 98th percentile of the user speed distribution. i.e. this is what the users with the highest speeds within the footprint experience.

Measured in Mbps, Broadband Upload Speed measures the average upload speeds for each internet service provider observed by our users across their fixed networks. Typically, upload speeds are slower than download speeds, but this often depends on the technology used for broadband connections.

Opensignal’s adaptive video experience quantifies the quality of video streamed to mobile devices by measuring real-world video streams over an operator's network. The metric measures users’ adaptive video experience using a Mean Opinion Score (MOS) approach inspired by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) studies which have derived a relationship between technical parameters of adaptive bitrate video streaming and the perceived video experience as reported by real people.

The videos tested are streamed directly from the world’s largest video content providers and include a wide selection of resolutions that dynamically match the network conditions, available bandwidth and device performance. Resolutions range from 144p to 2160p, which is also called 4K or UHD (Ultra High Definition). The model calculates a MOS score on a 0 to 100 scale by evaluating a number of parameters, including: the time to start playing the video, the quality of the video, the time playing each resolution, and the time spent re-buffering.

Opensignal's Broadband Reliability Experience measures the ability of a household to connect to the internet and to successfully complete 'uninterrupted' tasks across multiple devices, encompassing work and recreational activities. While Reliability incorporates and expands upon elements akin to Broadband Consistent Quality, it uniquely includes assessments of initial connectivity and continuous completion of tasks, making it more comprehensive in scenarios involving multiple simultaneous connections.

We also looked at the experience of our users in two most populated cities in New Zealand — Auckland and Christchurch — across three main internet service providers — 2degrees, One and Spark.

In Auckland, 2degrees collects four awards outright, for Consistent Quality, Download Speed, Upload Speed and Reliability Experience. It ties with One for Video Experience and with both One and Spark for Peak Download Speed in this city.

However, there is a fiercer battle for the city awards in Christchurch. While 2degrees wins both speed awards outright, it shares the winners’ podium with Spark for three more awards — Consistent Quality, Peak Download Speed, and Reliability Experience. Both ISPs are also joint winners for Video Experience in Christchurch, along with One.
