Slovak Telekom wins both the Voice App Experience and Games Experience awards outright. Slovak Telekom previously shared the Games Experience award with Orange, but now is the sole winner with a score of 83.1 points on a 100-point scale — around 4.3 points above both Orange and O2, which statistically tie for second place. Slovak Telekom also takes the top spot for Voice App Experience, which Orange won outright in the previous report. Slovak Telekom scores 82.3 points on a 100-point scale, 0.7 points above second-placed Orange.
Slovak Telekom manages to race ahead in Upload Speed Experience, an award it previously shared with Orange, winning it with a score of 14Mbps — 2.2Mbps ahead of Orange, which finishes in second place. All four operators had large improvements in their scores when compared to the previous report, ranging from an impressive 39.7% increase for Slovak Telekom to a modest 16.5% increase for orange. Slovak Telekom also takes home the first instance of the 5G Upload Speed award with a score of 37.3Mbps — 2.7 times its overall average upload speed.
Slovak Telekom retains both its award for Core Consistent Quality and for Excellent Consistent Quality, winning with a score of 95.2% and 89.5%, respectively. O2 remains first runner-up for Core Consistent Quality, 1.2 percentage points below Slovak Telekom — Orange and 4ka follow in third and fourth, respectively. Slovak Telekom defends Excellent Consistent Quality from Orange once again, with Orange scoring 87.8% — 1.7 percentage points below the lead. O2 comes in third place and 4ka once again brings up the rear.
Orange wins 5G Download Speed outright, and is the first reported operator in Slovakia to do so. The operator scores 148.2Mbps — 12.9Mbps ahead of nearest rival, Slovak Telekom. Orange now also shares the Download Speed Experience award with Slovak Telekom as the pair statistically tie with scores of 51.5-52.5Mbps. Slovak Telekom managed to catch Orange due to its large increase in score of 18.7Mbps (56.8%), while Orange users saw a smaller increase of 11.1Mbps (26.9%). Looking at the uplift to 5G from overall download speed O2 users see the largest difference, with their 5G score 3.5 times that of their overall score. Slovak Telekom and Orange see just as impressive uplifts of 2.6 and 2.8 times, respectively.
Orange wins the Availability award for a second time. Orange scores 97.7%, around 1.9 percentage points above O2 and Slovak Telekom, which tie for second place with statistically similar scores of 95.5-96.2% — 4ka comes in fourth place with a score of 86.9%. Orange's score means that our users on Orange's network spend 97.7% of their time with an active 3G or better connection.
In this Opensignal report on the Slovakian mobile network experience we present 5G awards for the first time – for which the included operators are Slovak Telekom, Orange and O2.
Slovak Telekom has managed to displace Orange from its spot at the top of the table with 11 awards — scooping up six outright victories and five joint wins. Slovak Telekom retains its wins in both consistency awards, while adding uncontested first places in Games Experience, Voice App Experience, Upload Speed Experience and 5G Upload Speed to its accomplishments.
Orange slips down to a still respectable six first place finishes. The operator keeps hold of its outright win in Availability and shared win in 4G Coverage Experience, picks up a clear victory in 5G Download Speed, and now shares three other awards.
Thanks to the 5G metrics, O2 is now on six winners' podiums, up from a singular shared first place previously. The operator takes home 5G Video Experience outright, and shares five other awards, including overall Video Experience. 4ka is yet to win an award but has made large improvements since the last report.
The Video Experience scores account for adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR), a technology that allows Opensignal to accurately represent users' real video experience including video streams up to 4K quality.
Orange announced in December 2022 that it will shut off its 3G network at the end of 2023, a full 12 months earlier than originally planned. The operator is looking to at least double its 5G coverage by that point, and the shutdown of the 3G network will allow Orange to use its 900MHz and 2100MHz spectrum to enhance the experience of users on 4G and 5G. The operator says it expects to shut down its 2G network between 2028 and 2030.
In this report, we analyzed our users' experience in Slovakia on each of the four national operators, 4ka, O2, Orange and Slovak Telekom, over a 90 day period starting on November 1, 2022, and ending on January 29, 2023, to see how they measure up. Despite 4ka not being included in 5G award categories, users' 5G measurements still contribute to the overall experience awards in this report.
Opensignal’s Video Experience quantifies the quality of video streamed to mobile devices by measuring real-world video streams over an operator's networks. The metric is based on an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approach, built upon detailed studies which have derived a relationship between technical parameters, including picture quality, video loading time and stall rate, with the perceived video experience as reported by real people. To calculate video experience, we are directly measuring video streams from end-user devices and using this ITU approach to quantify the overall video experience for each operator on a scale from 0 to 100. The videos tested include a mixture of resolutions — including Full HD (FHD) and 4K / Ultra HD (UHD) — and are streamed directly from the world’s largest video content providers.

Opensignal’s Games Experience measures how mobile users experience real-time multiplayer mobile gaming on an operator’s network. Measured on a scale of 0-100, it analyzes how our users’ multiplayer mobile gaming experience is affected by mobile network conditions including latency, packet loss and jitter.
Games Experience quantifies the experience when playing real-time multiplayer mobile games on mobile devices connected to servers located around the world. The approach is built on several years of research quantifying the relationship between technical network parameters and the gaming experience as reported by real mobile users. These parameters include latency (round trip time), jitter (variability of latency) and packet loss (the proportion of data packets that never reach their destination). Additionally, it considers multiple genres of multiplayer mobile games to measure the average sensitivity to network conditions. The games tested include some of the most popular real-time multiplayer mobile games (such as Fortnite, Pro Evolution Soccer and Arena of Valor) played around the world.
Calculating Games Experience starts with measuring the end-to-end experience from users’ devices to internet end-points that host real games. The score is then measured on a scale from 0 to 100.

Upload Speed Experience measures the average upload speeds for each operator observed by our users across their mobile data networks. Typically upload speeds are slower than download speeds, as current mobile broadband technologies focus resources on providing the best possible download speed for users consuming content on their devices. As mobile internet trends move away from downloading content to creating content and supporting real-time communications services, upload speeds are becoming more vital and new technologies are emerging that boost upstream capacity.
In addition to Upload Speed Experience, we report on five supporting metrics related to upload speeds:
5G Video Experience quantifies the quality of mobile video experienced by Opensignal users on real-world video streams when they were connected to 5G. Our availability metrics are not a measure of a network’s geographical extent. They won’t tell you whether you are likely to get a signal if you plan to visit a remote rural or nearly uninhabited region. Instead, they measure what proportion of time people have a network connection, in the places they most commonly frequent — something often missed by traditional coverage metrics. Looking at when users have a connection rather than where, provides us with a more precise reflection of the true user experience.
We also keep track of the instances that leave mobile users most frustrated: when there is no signal to connect to at all. The most common dead zones users struggle with occur indoors. As most of our availability data is collected indoors (as that’s where users spend most of their time), we’re particularly astute at detecting areas of zero signal.
Our availability metrics take a user-centric, time-based approach that complements the user-centric and geographical-based methodology used by our reach metrics.
Availability shows the proportion of time all Opensignal users on an operator’s network had either a 3G, 4G or 5G connection.

4G Coverage Experience measures how mobile subscribers experience 4G coverage on an operator’s network. Measured on a scale of 0-10, it analyzes the locations where customers of a network operator received a 4G signal relative to the locations visited by users of all network operators.
In simple terms, 4G Coverage Experience measures the mobile coverage experience in all the locations that matter most to everyday users — i.e. all the places where they live, work and travel. It considers all the areas that Opensignal users visit, the portion of locations that 4G is available to them, and locations that more users visit have higher importance to them.
The coverage maps show the locations where we received measurements from users connecting with 3G or better mobile service. Each map provides an indication of the areas in which it is possible to obtain mobile service from that mobile operator.
Consistent Quality measures how often users’ experience on a network was sufficient to support common applications’ requirements. It measures download speed, upload speed, latency, jitter, packet loss, time to first byte and the percentage of tests attempted which did not succeed due to a connectivity issue on either the download or server response component.

Excellent Consistent Quality is the percentage of users’ tests that met the minimum recommended performance thresholds to watch HD video, complete group video conference calls and play games.
