Key Findings

AIS can’t be beaten on speed

AIS takes the top spots for all speed categories, both overall and 5G. It retains its previously won outright awards for 5G Download Speed, 5G Upload Speed and Download Speed Experience. AIS wins 5G Download Speed with a score of 156.4 Mbps — 55.8% faster than TrueMove H. On top of that, the operator forced a statistical tie against TrueMove H for Upload Speed Experience and as a result, both are joint winners of this award, with identical scores of 8.2 Mbps.

Video Experience goes to TrueMove H, but AIS keeps hold of 5G Video Experience

This time around, TrueMove H wins only one award outright, for Video Experience. The operator does so with a score of 42.1 points — 1.1 points ahead of second-placed DTAC. However, AIS keeps a firm grip on 5G Video Experience, winning it outright for the second time in a row. Our AIS and TrueMove H users enjoyed a Very Good (65-75) 5G Video Experience, while DTAC placed in a category below — Good (55-65).

AIS keeps a firm grip on its games and voice app awards

AIS defends both 5G Games Experience and 5G Voice App Experience awards, winning both of them outright for the second consecutive time. In both cases, the operator wins ahead of DTAC, commanding modest leads of 2.3 and 1.1 points on a 100 point scale, respectively. Both AIS and DTAC placed in the Good (75-85) category for 5G Games Experience. AIS also remains the sole winner of both overall awards — Games Experience and Voice App Experience.

DTAC and AIS continue to be recognised for consistency

Opensignal observed no changes in award holders when it comes to consistency categories — with both previous winners securing them for the second time in a row in Opensignal reports. AIS wins Excellent Consistent Quality, with a score of 62.9% — two percentage points higher than in the previous report. After a modest increase of 0.6 percentage points, DTAC keeps hold of Core Consistent Quality with a score of 87.1% — making it the operator’s only outright win this time around.

Our AIS and TrueMove H 5G users connected to 5G services for more than 20% of the time

In the previous report, AIS was the sole winner of 5G Availability and 5G Reach. This time, however, TrueMove H jumps onto the winners’ podium for both awards and shares them with AIS. Both operators jointly win 5G Availability with scores of 22.6-23.2% — meaning, our users on these networks connected to 5G services for more than 20% of the time. DTAC comes third, at least 10 percentage points behind the winners.

Market Overview

In this Thailand Mobile Network Experience report, AIS has the lion’s share of awards, winning nine of them outright and four jointly — compared to 11 sole and one shared victory in the previous report. AIS adds an additional joint win under its belt after forcing a statistical tie against TrueMove H for Upload Speed Experience. Our users in Thailand enjoyed the fastest download speeds on the AIS network, both 5G and overall — along with the best games and voice app experience. The operator also retains its awards for Upload Speed Experience, 5G Video Experience and Excellent Consistent Quality as their sole winner.

However, TrueMove H ends with two more awards than last time. It adds 5G Availability and 5G Reach to its collection of joint wins, sharing the podium with the previous sole winner AIS. Both TrueMove H and DTAC win only one award outright this time — Video Experience and Core Consistent Quality, respectively. Just like in the previous report, all three operators are joint winners for Availability.

TrueMove H and DTAC’s planned merger is still in progress. Initially, two out of four subcommittees established by Thailand’s telecom regulator NBTC to evaluate the merger’s impact voted against it. However, the Administrative Court later dismissed a petition against the 2018 NBTC regulation, which allows mergers without the regulator’s approval. In October 2022, NBTC cleared the TrueMove H and DTAC’s merger with conditions, such as a price ceiling, price controls and an independent verification of cost structure and service fee for at least five years.

DTAC and TrueMove H combining their operations could create a solid contender that would threaten AIS’s dominance of the Thai mobile network experience — especially given the current substantial differences in spectrum holdings between the three main Thai operators. Meanwhile, AIS is planning a takeover on its own, as it intends to acquire Triple T Broadband (3BB) internet service provider, for THB32.4 billion ($908 million) — which according to AIS will improve consumer access to broadband in northern parts of Thailand and rural areas. NBTC is likely to approve the acquisition by Q1 2023.

Our results in this report are based on measurements collected across all major mobile operators in Thailand – AIS, DTAC and TrueMove H – over the period of 90 days between July 1, 2022 and September 28, 2022, to see how they fared.

National Analysis

TrueMove H wins Video Experience outright, making it the operator’s only sole victory in the report this time around. The operator does so with a score of 42.1 points on a 100 point scale — 1.1 points ahead of second-placed DTAC. AIS brings up the rear, with a score of 37.7 points. Both TrueMove H and DTAC placed in the Fair (40-55) category.

Our 5G users in Thailand enjoyed a significantly better overall video experience, as all operators placed in the Good (55-65) category, with AIS and TrueMove H seeing the highest, statistically tied scores in Video Experience — 5G Users. A Good rating means an acceptable but inconsistent experience, even from the same video streaming provider and particularly for higher resolutions, with noticeably slow loading times and stalling not being uncommon. AIS saw the highest difference in score compared to Video Experience, with 20.5 points, while TrueMove H and DTAC saw increases of 15.9 and 14.3 points, respectively.

Definitions

Opensignal’s Video Experience quantifies the quality of video streamed to mobile devices by measuring real-world video streams over an operator's networks. The metric is based on an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approach, built upon detailed studies which have derived a relationship between technical parameters, including picture quality, video loading time and stall rate, with the perceived video experience as reported by real people. To calculate video experience, we are directly measuring video streams from end-user devices and using this ITU approach to quantify the overall video experience for each operator on a scale from 0 to 100. The videos tested include a mixture of resolutions — including Full HD (FHD) and 4K / Ultra HD (UHD) — and are streamed directly from the world’s largest video content providers.

In addition to Video Experience, we report on the following metrics related to video experience:

  • 5G Video Experience: The average Video Experience of Opensignal users when they were connected to an operator’s 5G network.
  • Video Experience – 5G Users: The average Video Experience of Opensignal users with a 5G device and a 5G subscription across an operator's networks. It factors in 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G video experience along with the availability of each technology.
  • 4G Video Experience: The average Video Experience of Opensignal users on an operator's 4G network.
  • 3G Video Experience: The average Video Experience of Opensignal users on an operator’s 3G network.

Definitions

Opensignal’s Games Experience measures how mobile users experience real-time multiplayer mobile gaming on an operator’s network. Measured on a scale of 0-100, it analyzes how our users’ multiplayer mobile gaming experience is affected by mobile network conditions including latency, packet loss and jitter.

Games Experience quantifies the experience when playing real-time multiplayer mobile games on mobile devices connected to servers located around the world. The approach is built on several years of research quantifying the relationship between technical network parameters and the gaming experience as reported by real mobile users. These parameters include latency (round trip time), jitter (variability of latency) and packet loss (the proportion of data packets that never reach their destination). Additionally, it considers multiple genres of multiplayer mobile games to measure the average sensitivity to network conditions. The games tested include some of the most popular real-time multiplayer mobile games (such as Fortnite, Pro Evolution Soccer and Arena of Valor) played around the world.

Calculating Games Experience starts with measuring the end-to-end experience from users’ devices to internet end-points that host real games. The score is then measured on a scale from 0 to 100.

In addition to Games Experience, we report on the following metrics related to games experience:

  • 5G Games Experience: The average Games Experience of Opensignal users when they were connected to an operator’s 5G network.
  • Games Experience – 5G Users: The average Games Experience of Opensignal users with a 5G device and a 5G subscription across an operator's networks. It factors in 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G games experience along with the availability of each technology.
  • 4G Games Experience: The average Games Experience of Opensignal users on an operator's 4G network.
  • 3G Games Experience: The average Games Experience of Opensignal users on an operator's 3G (e.g. UMTS/HSPA or CDMA 1X EV-DO) network.

Definitions

Opensignal's Voice App Experience measures the quality of experience for over-the-top (OTT) voice services — mobile voice apps such as WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook Messenger — using a model derived from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approach for quantifying overall voice call quality and a series of calibrated technical parameters. This model characterizes the exact relationship between the technical measurements and perceived call quality. Voice App Experience for each operator is calculated on a scale from 0 to 100.

In addition to Voice App Experience, we report on the following metrics related to voice app experience:

  • 5G Voice App Experience: The average Voice App Experience of Opensignal users when they were connected to an operator’s 5G network.
  • Voice App Experience – 5G Users: The average Voice App Experience of Opensignal users with a 5G device and a 5G subscription across an operator's networks. It factors in 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G voice app experience along with the availability of each technology.
  • 4G Voice App Experience: The average Voice App Experience of Opensignal users on an operator's 4G network.
  • 3G Voice App Experience: The average Voice App Experience of Opensignal users on an operator's 3G (e.g. UMTS/HSPA or CDMA 1X EV-DO) network.

AIS retains 5G Video Experience with a score of 72.2 points, winning it outright for the second consecutive time. AIS commanded a lead of 4.5 points over second-placed TrueMove H.

5G services can improve the users’ mobile network experience significantly, as all of Thailand’s operators saw impressive increases in their scores compared to Video Experience. As a result, they all placed in higher categories than they did for the overall Video Experience. AIS’ improvement was the most impressive, as the operator’s 5G Video Experience score was 34.4 points higher than its Video Experience result — and so, AIS placed three categories higher, from Poor (under 40) to Very Good (65-75). A Very Good 5G Video Experience means generally fast loading times and only occasional stalling but the experience might have been somewhat inconsistent across users and/or video providers/resolutions.

TrueMove H placed two categories higher, going from Fair (40-55) in Video Experience to Very Good (65-75) in 5G Video Experience thanks to a 25.6 points increase. Meanwhile, the uplift in DTAC’s score was a rise of 23.6 points, and so its rating improved from Fair (40-55) for Video Experience to Good (55-65) for 5G Video Experience.

Notably, Thai operators’ improvements in video services when connected to 5G networks are significant at a global level. In the 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2022 report. All three of Thailand’s wireless carriers were featured in the Global Impact — Video Experience category, which recognizes the operators with the highest 5G to 4G improvement — with AIS taking the second spot, right behind the Philippines' Globe.

Definitions

5G Video Experience quantifies the quality of mobile video experienced by Opensignal users on real-world video streams when they were connected to 5G. The metric is based on an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approach, built upon detailed studies which have derived a relationship between technical parameters, including picture quality, video loading time and stall rate, with the perceived video experience as reported by real people. To calculate 5G Video Experience, we are directly measuring video streams from end-user devices and using this ITU approach to quantify the video experience observed by our users on each operator’s 5G network on a scale from 0 to 100. The videos tested include a mixture of resolutions — including Full HD (FHD) and 4K / Ultra HD (UHD) — and are streamed directly from the world’s largest video content providers.

National Analysis

AIS triumphs in 5G Games Experience outright for the second time in a row, with a score of 79.5 points on a 100 point scale and a winning margin of 2.3 points over the runner-up DTAC. Both AIS and DTAC placed in the Good (75-85) category for 5G Games Experience. This means most users deemed the experience acceptable and did not experience a delay between their actions and the game. Meanwhile, TrueMove H rated as Fair (65-75) — as it slipped from the Good (75-85) category due to a 2.8 point decline in its score since the previous report.

Compared to their Games Experience scores, Thailand’s operators’ 5G Games Experience scores were significantly higher — ranging from 10.3 points for AIS, through 13.4 points for DTAC to 16.3 points for TrueMove H. Opensignal recognized both DTAC and TrueMove H for Global Impact — Games Experience (5G versus 4G uplift) in the 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2022 report.

Definitions

5G Games Experience measures how mobile users experience real-time multiplayer mobile gaming on an operator's 5G network. It analyzes how our users’ multiplayer mobile gaming experience was affected by mobile network conditions including latency, packet loss and jitter. 5G Games Experience for each operator is calculated on a scale from 0 to 100.

5G Games Experience quantifies the experience when playing real-time multiplayer mobile games on mobile devices connected to servers located around the world. Calculating 5G Games Experience starts with measuring the end-to-end experience from users’ devices to internet end-points that host real games.

AIS defends its 5G Voice App Experience award, as it wins it for the second time in a row. AIS wins with a score of 82.7 points, 1.1 points ahead of DTAC. TrueMove H brings up the rear with a score of 80.9 points. Our users enjoyed Good (80-87) voice app services when connected to 5G services on any of the three main Thai mobile networks. A Good rating means many users were satisfied but some experienced minor quality impairments.

Definitions

5G Voice App Experience quantifies the experience of Opensignal users when using over-the-top voice apps — such as WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook Messenger — on an operator’s 5G network. It uses a model derived from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approach for quantifying overall voice call quality and a series of calibrated technical parameters. This model characterizes the exact relationship between the technical measurements and perceived call quality. 5G Voice App Experience for each operator is calculated on a scale from 0 to 100.

National Analysis
Regional Analysis

National Analysis

All three of Thailand’s national operators — AIS, DTAC and TrueMove H share the Availability award with identical scores of 99.1%. These results mean our users in Thailand connected to 3G, 4G or 5G services more than 99% of the time. Just like in the previous report, this was the only category where we saw all of the Thai operators ending as joint winners.

Definitions

Our availability metrics are not a measure of a network’s geographical extent. They won’t tell you whether you are likely to get a signal if you plan to visit a remote rural or nearly uninhabited region. Instead, they measure what proportion of time people have a network connection, in the places they most commonly frequent — something often missed by traditional coverage metrics. Looking at when users have a connection rather than where, provides us with a more precise reflection of the true user experience.

We also keep track of the instances that leave mobile users most frustrated: when there is no signal to connect to at all. The most common dead zones users struggle with occur indoors. As most of our availability data is collected indoors (as that’s where users spend most of their time), we’re particularly astute at detecting areas of zero signal.

Our availability metrics take a user-centric, time-based approach that complements the user-centric and geographical-based methodology used by our reach metrics.

Availability shows the proportion of time all Opensignal users on an operator’s network had either a 3G, 4G or 5G connection.

National Analysis

In the previous report, AIS won 5G Availability outright, but this time, it has to share it with TrueMove H, after AIS score dropped by 1.5 percentage points since the last report, while TrueMove H’s result improved by 1.8 percentage points. Both operators jointly win 5G Availability with scores of 22.6-23.2% — meaning, our users on these networks had an active 5G connection for more than 20% of the time. DTAC comes third with a score of 12.6%, at least 10 percentage points behind the joint winners — although it saw the highest increase in its score among all three operators, of 3.4 percentage points.

In the 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2022 report, DTAC topped the Rising Star — 5G Availability category, as the operator saw the highest year on year improvement in the world, of 478.9%. In the same report, Opensignal recognized AIS and TrueMove H as Global High Performers for 5G Availability.

AIS and TrueMove H are joint winners of 5G Reach, with statistically tied scores of4.6-5 points, on a 10 point scale. DTAC brings up the rear with a score of 3.1 points — meaning, our users on this network connected to 5G in more than three out of 10 locations they visited.

Similar to 5G Availability, both AIS and TrueMove H were featured as Global High Performers for 5G Reach in Opensignal’s 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2022 report.

Definitions

5G Reach measures how users experience the geographical extent of an operator’s 5G network. It analyzes the average proportion of locations where users were connected to a 5G network out of all the locations those users have visited. In simple terms, 5G Reach measures the 5G mobile experience in all the locations that matter most to everyday users – i.e. all the places where they live, work and travel. 5G Reach for each operator is measured on a scale from 0 to 10.

Regional Analysis

We observed a tight competition for regional Coverage awards in Thailand. Both AIS and TrueMove H win one regional award outright for 5G Availability — in South and Bangkok Metropolis respectively. TrueMove H claims the award in the capital city with the highest result in Thailand — 31.9%. This means our users connected to 5G services on this network in Bangkok Metropolis for almost a third of the time. On top of this, TrueMove H claims three regional joint wins in this category, while AIS — has two regional joint wins. DTAC jointly wins one award for 5G Availability, sharing it with TrueMove H in Northeast.

There were no outright wins for Availability, but AIS jointly wins across all seven regions, followed by six joint awards for TrueMove H (all regions bar Central) and four shared recognitions for DTAC. Our users connected to 3G or better services for the highest amount of time in Bangkok Metropolis, where all three operators jointly win with identical scores of 99.5%.
