Key Findings

Orange continues to be the outright winner of the Download Speed Experience Award

Continuing the trend observed in ourlast report, our users on Orange’s network saw the fastest average download speed of 48.9 Mbps in Slovakia, an improvement of 5.2 Mbps from the last report. While our users on Telekom and 4ka’s networks saw no significant change, O2’s speed increased by 2.7 Mbps. However, Orange and Telekom remain in a two-way tie for the Upload Speed Experience award with no Slovakian operator showing significant change in upload speeds since our last report.

Telekom and Orange are joint winners for all three experiential metrics

Orange and Telekom share the awards for all three of our experiential metrics. This is a marked change from the two previous reports — as Telekom had been the outright winner of both of the Games Experience and Voice App Experience awards. The joint winners were the only operators to place in the Excellent category (75 or above) for Video Experience. However, O2 placed in the same category as the front-runners for Games Experience — Good (75<85) — and all four operators placed in the Good (80-87) category for Voice App Experience.

Users on O2 and Orange’s network connect to 4G more than 90% of the time

Similar to the results demonstrated in our previous report, O2 and Orange again tie for the 4G Availability award with a score of 93.6%, with Telekom following closely at 91.6% while 4ka lagged behind with a score of 69.0%. This means that more than 90% of the time, Opensignal users were connected to a 4G or better connection while being on these three operators’ networks.

O2, Orange and Telekom are in a three way tie for our 4G Coverage Experience Award

Looking at 4G Coverage Experience, Opensignal’s metric that measures its users’ 4G coverage experience on an operator’s network, O2, Orange and Telekom’s joint win remains unchanged from the previous report. Also, our users did not see any statistically significant change in 4G Coverage Experience since the previous report on any operator's network.

Introduction

Fewer changes are visible since the last report analyzing mobile network experience in Slovakia was published in September 2021, with two clear wins turning into joint wins this time around. Download Speed Experience is the only category with an outright winner with all the others being shared between operators. While Orange and Telekom statistically tie for all the experiential metrics and Upload Speed Experience, O2 and Orange share the award for 4G Availability and O2, Orange and Telekom jointly win the award for 4G Coverage Experience.

While Slovakia may not be as advanced in 5G deployment as some other European countries, it certainly is making progress in that direction. While O2 reportedly aims to provide 5G services in all regional cities in Slovakia this year after deploying it in Bratislava and eastern Slovakia, Orange claimed to have reached 2.6% 5G coverage by the end of 2021 and aims to cover 20% of the country’s population by the end of this year. It will be interesting to see how our results change as 5G penetration improves in the country.

The four Slovakian operators have reportedly also reached an agreement to refarm frequencies on the 1800 MHz band to make their spectrum blocks more contiguous and the regulator expects the deal to be concluded in a couple of months. Under the agreement, operators reportedly acquire two blocks of 20 MHz spectrum in three parts of the country and two blocks of 15MHz in one agreed area in the country. This consolidation of spectrum will allow operators to optimize their spectrum usage and make their 2G, 4G and 5G networks more efficient thereby improving user experience.

In this report, we analyzed our users' experience in Slovakia on each of the four national operators, 4ka, O2, Orange and Telekom, over a 90 day period starting on November 1, 2021, and ending on January 29, 2022. 5G measurements and those of older 3G and 4G mobile technologies contribute to operators' overall scores.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
