Key Findings

Telia dominates in speed metrics

Telia wins the Download Speed Experience and Upload Speed Experience awards by a huge margin. Our users on Telia’s network saw average download speeds of 65.8 Mbps, an impressive 25.3 Mbps (62.5%) above the speeds observed on second-placed Tele2’s network and 38.5 Mbps (140.8%) above BITĖ. Likewise, on average, the fastest upload speeds of 15.8 Mbps were also observed by our Telia users. However, BITĖ placed second with a score of 10.2 Mbps followed by 8.6 Mbps on Tele2’s network.

All three share the top spot on Video Experience and Voice App experience

BITĖ, Tele2 and Telia are joint winners of the Video Experience and Voice App Experience awards with statistically tied scores in both metrics , which are are measured on a 100-point scale. All three operators placed in the Very Good (65<75) category for Video Experience, while earning a Good rating (80<87) in Voice App Experience. Opensignal’s Video Experience and Voice App Experience measure the experience while streaming videos and using over-the-top (OTT) voice apps, respectively, when connected to a mobile network.

BITĖ and Telia are joint-winners of the Games Experience award

BITĖ and Telia share the Games Experience award as our users reported no significant difference in the quality of multiplayer mobile gaming experience over cellular networks. Opensignal's Games Experience assesses how mobile users experience real-time multiplayer mobile gaming on an operator's network. Measured on a scale of 0-100, it analyzes how the multiplayer mobile gaming experience is affected by mobile network conditions, including latency, packet loss and jitter.

Telia wins 4G Availability outright, while Tele2 leads in 4G Coverage Experience

With a score of 96.9%, Telia wins the 4G Availability award meaning Opensignal users spent the greatest proportion of time connected to 4G or better services when using Telia. On the other hand, BITĖ and Tele2 tie for second place with scores of 87.6% and 89.6% respectively. In contrast, Tele2 leads in 4G Coverage Experience, which analyzes the locations where customers of a network operator received a 4G signal relative to the locations visited by users of all network operators.

Introduction

In our first operator-level analysis on Lithuania’s mobile market, Opensignal found Telia to be the dominant operator when it comes to national mobile network experience. The operator wins three out of our seven awards outright — Download Speed Experience, Upload Speed Experience, and 4G Availability — and each one of them by a large margin. Telia also shares the top spot alongside BITĖ and Tele2 in Video Experience and Voice App Experience, while sharing Games Experience with BITĖ. Meanwhile, Tele2 is the only other operator to achieve an outright win, as it leads in 4G Coverage Experience.

In January 2022, Telia became the first operator in Lithuania to launch commercial 5G services. It deployed its network in Vilnius in the 2100MHz band, using Dynamic Spectrum Sharing technology. The operator intends to switch off its 3G network by the end of 2022. Meanwhile, Lithuania’s operators will have a chance to purchase 5G-suitable spectrum in the upcoming auctions — the 700 MHz band auction in May 2022 and the 3.5 GHz band auction — in June 2022.

In this report, we’ve analyzed the mobile network experience on Lithuania’s three national operators — BITĖ, Tele2 and Telia — at the national level in the 90 day period starting on November 1, 2021, and ending on January 29, 2022.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
