Key Findings

Entel wins the Games Experience award

Opensignal users in Peru had their best experience when playing multiplayer mobile games over cellular connections on Entel’s network. The operator is the outright winner of the Games Experience award with a score of 41.6 points on a 100 point scale, after having shared the award with Movistar in the previous two reports. Claro and Movistar are in joint second place with statistically tied scores of 38.9-39.3 points so Entel wins by a margin of around 2.5 points. Entel has stayed in the top spot for Games Experience in Peru, either outright or jointly ever since the August 2020 report, when this metric was first introduced to Peru mobile network experience reports.

Claro’s winning streak for 4G Coverage Experience remains unbroken

Claro is once again the outright winner of the 4G Coverage Experience award. In fact, it is the only operator to have won this award since its addition to Peruvian mobile network experience reports back in February 2020. Claro’s lead over second-placed Movistar is unchanged from the previous report (0.3 points) and our users did not observe any statistically significant changes on all four operator’s networks. Opensignal’s 4G Coverage Experience is a measure of how mobile subscribers experience 4G coverage on an operator’s network. It analyzes the locations where customers of a network operator received a 4G signal relative to the locations visited by users of all network operators.

Users saw their highest average upload speeds on Entel’s network

Entel is the outright winner of the Upload Speed Experience award, after having statistically tied for the award with Movistar in the last report. This is a return to form for Entel as the operator has won the award outright in all the previous reports that included Upload Speed Experience (going back to February 2019). Our users on Entel’s network observed average upload speeds of 10.2 Mbps — up an impressive 2.6 Mbps (34.3%) from the previous report and 2.1 Mbps (25.6%) faster than second-placed Movistar’s score of 8.1 Mbps. Claro and Bitel also saw statistically significant improvements in their scores — 0.4 Mbps (6.1%) and 0.8 Mbps (37.4%), respectively — while Movistar’s had not changed statistically from the last report.

Claro shares the Download Speed Experience award with Entel

Our users saw their highest average download speeds on Entel and Claro’s networks — 16.6-17.5 Mbps — as the two operators’ scores are statistically tied. This is a change from the previous report when Claro won the Download Speed Experience award outright. An impressive 4.2 Mbps (34.4%) increase in Entel’s score led to a joint victory, as our Claro users did not observe a statistically significant change in their speeds between the two reports. Bitel is the only other operator to see a significant change in its score, with an increase of 1.8 Mbps (35.1%) but still lagging well behind the others.

The contest for Voice App Experience narrows to a two-way tie between Claro and Entel

Claro and Entel are joint winners of the Voice App Experience award, due to statistically tied scores of 73.1-74.2 points. This is a change from the previous report, as back then both operators shared the award alongside Movistar. This means that our Peruvian users had their best experience when using over-the-top voice apps — such as WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook Messenger — on cellular connections when on Entel and Claro’s networks.

Introduction

Entel claims the lion’s share of awards as it collects two outright wins (Games Experience and Upload Speed Experience) while winning three awards jointly (Voice App Experience and Download Speed Experience with Claro, 4G Availability with Movistar). Claro has the second largest haul, with one outright win (4G Coverage Experience) and two joint wins alongside Entel. While Claro has had to share the Download Speed Experience award with Entel, Movistar’s collection awards has shrunk from one outright win and four joint wins in the previous report to one outright victory (Video Experience) and one shared win (4G Availability).

In our latest look at the Peruvian mobile network experience, we've analyzed data across the period starting October 1, 2021, and ending December 29, 2021, covering all four national operators — Bitel, Claro, Entel and Movistar. We have used 5G measurements in addition to those from previous generations of mobile network technology when determining the overall scores for each metric.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
