Key Findings

Vodafone loses its edge on Video, Games and Voice App Experience

In the last report, Vodafone won all of the experiential awards outright — Video Experience, Games Experience and Voice App Experience. This time, however, the operator has to share these awardswith its competitors. T-Mobile joins Vodafone on the winners’ podium for the Games Experience and Voice App Experience — while for the Video Experience award, our users saw a three-way joint statistical tie, including O2.

Czech operators see their Games Experience scores soar

All operators saw significant improvements in their Games Experience scores. O2 and T-Mobile’s scores increased by 7.8 and 7.3 points respectively, while the previous sole winner Vodafone — improved by four points. This led to less than two points separating all Czech operators, down from 5.8 points seen in the previous report. All operators placed in the Good (75<85) category — and now are just 0.1-2.0 points shy of the Excellent (85 and above) category.

Our users in the Czech Republic saw significant increases in average download speeds

For the second time in a row, T-Mobile and Vodafone jointly win the Download Speed Experience award. Our users observed no statistically significant difference in their average download speeds on these networks, with both of them exceeding the 45 Mbps mark this time around. All operators in the Czech Republic saw increases in their scores — 3.5 Mbps (8.2%) for Vodafone, 4.6 Mbps (14.8%) for O2 and 7.1 Mbps (17.8%) for T-Mobile.

T-Mobile and Vodafone jointly win the Upload Speed Experience award

In the last report, Vodafone was the outright winner of Upload Speed Experience. However, this time around, T-Mobile has forced a statistical tie against the previous winner, thanks to an impressive increase of 3.1 Mbps (21.6%), compared to Vodafone’s smaller rise of 1.5 Mbps (9.7%). Our users on O2’s network also experienced faster average upload speeds of 16 Mbps — 2.5 Mbps (18.5%) more than in the previous report

The only outright win goes to O2 for 4G Coverage Experience

With a score of 9.7 points on a 10-point scale, O2 retained its 4G Coverage Experience award, winning it for the third time in a row — and this was the only outright win we observed in the awards table this time around. The operator remains the sole winner of this award since we introduced the Mobile Network Experience reports on the Czech Republic. As for the other 4G extent measure — T-Mobile falls behind its competitors, leaving O2 and Vodafone as joint winners of 4G Availability — and all three operators were joint winners in the previous report. All Czech national operators scored above 92% in this metric, which means our 4G users were, on average, connected to 4G or better services on their network more than 92% of the time.

Introduction

In the third report on Mobile Network Experience in the Czech Republic, we see a tightly-fought contest between national operators. Only one award is won outright this time around, as O2 claims 4G Coverage Experience for the third time in a row. Vodafone’s count of outright wins goes down from four to zero, while T-Mobile increases its haul of joint wins from two to five, compared to the previous report. T-Mobile forces a statistical tie against the previous sole winner Vodafone for three awards — Games Experience, Voice App Experience and Upload Speed Experience. Vodafone was also an outright winner of the Video Experience award, but now all three operators are its joint winners.

In the recently published Global Awards 2022 report, Opensignal recognized all of Czech Republic’s operators among the top operators globally in four categories — Video Experience, Games Experience, Voice App Experience and Upload Speed Experience. Vodafone became one of the Global Winners of Voice App Experience — along with South Korea’s LG U+ and SK telecom — and was acknowledged as Global Leader in the remaining three aforementioned categories. T-Mobile became a Global Leader in Games Experience and Voice App Experience, while O2 is a Global Rising Star in Voice App Experience.

In November, T-Mobile and O2 switched off their 3G networks — however, both operators keep their 2G networks active. Their competitor, Vodafone, disabled its 3G services back in March 2021. 2G networks are likely to stay for a few more years, as per the regulator’s requirements to provide services to users with older phones. As a condition to extend the operator’s 2100 MHz band licence, the Czech Telecommunication Office (CTU) recently obliged O2 to keep its 2G network operational until at least 2028, unless the share of all 2G users falls below 5%.

To provide a greater understanding of the mobile experience, we also publish additional metrics looking at the experience of 5G users in the Czech Republic. This differs from our mobile network experience awards because instead of representing the experience for all users, these supporting metrics reflect the overall experience of only those smartphone users that have both a 5G tariff plan and a 5G-capable smartphone taking into account the amount of time these users spent connected to different network technologies.

In this report, we've analyzed the mobile network experience for the Czech Republic's national operators — O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone, over a period of 90 days beginning November 1, 2021 and ending January 29, 2022, to see how they fared. 5G measurements contributed to the overall scores. Alongside this analysis, we have also published a companion report — Czech Republic 5G Experience Report — which analyzes the experience of our 5G users when connected to 5G technology.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
