Key Findings

Our Cellcard users had the best multiplayer mobile gaming experience

Cellcard is the sole winner of the Games Experience award with a score of 45.9 points on a 100 point scale, and a lead of around 2.4 points over Smart Axiata and Metfone which are statistically tied for second place. In the last report, Cellcard and Metfone were joint winners, but this time around, Cellcard has been able to break the statistical tie and win outright. Games Experience analyzes how the multiplayer mobile gaming experience is affected by mobile network conditions including latency, packet loss and jitter.

Cellcard puts on a burst of speed, but Smart Axiata still wins the Download Speed Experience award

While the average download speeds observed by our users on all three operators’ networks have risen significantly since the last report, those on Cellcard have seen the most improvement. Cellcard’s Download Speed Experience score rose by 2.6 Mbps (26.2%), while Smart Axiata and Metfone’s increased by 1.7 Mbps (14.5%) and 0.9 Mbps (9%), respectively. These changes have pushed Cellcard into second place, replacing Metfone, and cut Smart Axiata’s lead from 1.1 Mbps to 0.7 Mbps.

Metfone and Smart Axiata share the Voice App Experience award

When using over-the-top (OTT) voice apps such as WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook Messenger, our Cambodian users had their best experience on Metfone and Smart Axiata’s networks, due to a statistical tie between the two operators’ scores. This is a change from the last three reports, when Metfone won the Voice App Experience award outright.

Metfone draws level with Cellcard and Smart Axiata on Upload Speed Experience

Cellcard, Metfone and Smart Axiata are joint winners of the Upload Speed Experience award. In the previous report, the award was shared between Cellcard and Smart Axiata, but this time a 0.2 Mbps increase in Metfone’s score has created a three-way statistical tie, as the previous winners’ scores remained statistically unchanged.

Smart Axiata’s impressive winning streak for 4G Availability remains unbroken

This is the third report in a row in which Smart Axiata has been the only operator in Cambodia whose users spent 90% or more of their time connected to 4G. In addition, the operator has now held the 4G Availability award for eight reports in a row. The last time it had to share the award was back in the February 2018 report when all three operators were joint winners. However, Metfone wins the 4G Coverage Experience outright for the fourth report running.

Introduction

Looking at the awards table, Smart Axiata has performed most strongly as it has racked up two outright wins (Download Speed Experience and 4G Availability) and three joint wins (Video Experience, Voice App Experience and Upload Speed Experience). Metfone wins the 4G Coverage Experience award outright for the fourth report in a row and picks up three joint wins, while Cellcard is the sole winner of the Games Experience award and remains a joint winner of the Upload Speed Experience award.

In this report, we've analyzed our data gathered in the 90 day period starting on 1 October 2021 and ending on 29 December 2021 to see how Cambodia’s three national operators — Cellcard, Metfone and Smart Axiata — measure up.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
