Key Findings

Cosmote is top for 5G Availability

Cosmote is head and shoulders above its competitors in terms of the amount of time our 5G users spend connected to 5G — 5G Availability. Our Cosmote 5G users spent 16.3% of their time with an active 5G connection — which was more than three times greater than the time reported by our Vodafone (5.4%) and Wind (4.6%) users which were statistically tied.

5G Video Experience on all three Greek networks ranks as Excellent

Our first look at Greece's 5G Video Experience has revealed a statistical tie between all three operators — Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind. All three operators' 5G Video Experience scores place in the Excellent category (75 and above) on our 100-point scale. An Excellent rating indicates a very consistent experience across all users, video streaming providers and resolutions tested, with fast loading times and almost non-existent stalling. 5G Video Experience quantifies the quality of video streamed to mobile devices by measuring real-world video streams over carriers' 5G networks.

Cosmote wins the first 5G Download Speed award in Greece

With a 5G Download Speed score of 178.3 Mbps, our Cosmote users experienced the fastest average 5G download speeds. This means Cosmote wins the first 5G Download Speed award in Greece with a lead of 31.7 Mbps (21.6%) over second-placed Wind, while our Vodafone users saw average 5G download speeds of 110.3 Mbps. On the other hand, all three operators shared the 5G Upload Speed award with statistically tied scores ranging from 27.4 Mbps to 29 Mbps.

5G users across Greece enjoy a Good 5G Voice App Experience

Vodafone and Wind are the joint winners for 5G Voice App Experience with statistically tied scores of 83.6 points and 84.3 points, respectively, while Cosmote followed close behind with a score of 80.4 points. With these scores, all three achieved a Good rating (80-87). Opensignal's 5G Voice App Experience measures the quality of experience for over-the-top (OTT) voice services — mobile voice apps such as WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook Messenger on a scale of 0-100. A Good 5G Voice App Experience means that many users were satisfied, although some may have experienced minor quality impairments such as clicking sounds or distortion.

Vodafone and Wind are joint winners of 5G Games Experience

Similar to 5G Voice App Experience, Vodafone and Wind jointly win the 5G Games Experience award. Our users on both operators' 5G networks had a Good (75<85) 5G Games Experience, while Cosmote's score achieved a Fair rating (65<75). Opensignal's 5G Games Experience measures how mobile users experience real-time multiplayer mobile gaming on an operator's 5G network. On a scale of 0-100, it analyzes how the multiplayer mobile gaming experience is affected by mobile network conditions, including latency, packet loss and jitter.

Introduction

Opensignal's first 5G Experience report on Greece reveals fierce competition across the three national operators. While Cosmote wins two out of six awards outright, two or more operators share the other awards with statistically tied scores indicating close results — Vodafone and Wind jointly win 5G Games Experience and 5G Voice App Experience, while all three operators are statistically tied for 5G Video Experience and 5G Upload Speed.

Our results show more variation between operators in the 5G Availability — the proportion of time that our 5G users spent connected to 5G — and 5G Download Speed categories. Cosmote wins both of these awards by a clear margin.

Currently, mobile operators in Greece are expanding their 5G footprint. Cosmote claims to have covered 60% of the population by the end of 2021 and has aims to exceed 80% by the end of 2022. Wind hopes to exceed 60% 5G coverage by the end of 2023, while Vodafone expects to cover 40% of the Greek population by March 2022.

In this report, we've analyzed real-world 5G data gathered in the 90 days starting October 1 and ending December 29, 2021, to see how Greece's three national operators — Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind — stack up. Our results in this report use measurements from our users when they were connected to 5G networks. We have also published a separate report — Greece Mobile Network Experience January 2021 — which analyzes the overall experience of all our mobile users in the country.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
