Key Findings

Our Viettel Mobile users saw the highest average download speeds in Vietnam

Viettel Mobile wins Opensignal’s Download Speed Experience award once again, this time with a score of 28.3 Mbps. The average download speeds observed by our Viettel Mobile users are1.5 Mbps faster than our Vinaphone users (26.7 Mbps) and a further 6.9 Mbps faster than those on MobiFone (21.3 Mbps). Meanwhile, the Download Speed Experience on Vietnamobile continues to significantly lag behind, with users’ speeds averaging below 5 Mbps.

Mobifone holds on to the Upload Speed Experience award

Mobifone successfully defends the outright win for Upload Speed Experience, which the operator achieved in our previous report, with a score of 11 Mbps this time. Meanwhile, Vinaphone and Viettel Mobile trail closely with users’ upload speeds averaging 9.2 Mbps and 8.8 Mbps, respectively. Upload speed is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the mobile network experience, as it affects how quickly and conveniently mobile users can share large files, such as photos or videos, using social media services or as email attachments.

Viettel Mobile continues to reign supreme when it comes to 4G access in Vietnam

Viettel Mobile once again claims our 4G Availability award, as our Viettel Mobile users spent the highest proportion of time connected to 4G compared to users on any other Vietnamese network. However, users across all four national networks saw 4G Availability above 80% on average. Viettel Mobile also wins our 4G Coverage Experience award with a score of 8.8 points (on a scale of 0-10). Opensignal’s 4G Coverage Experience analyzes the locations where customers of a network operator received a 4G signal relative to the locations visited by users of all network operators.

Viettel Mobile tops all three experiential award categories

Viettel Mobile once again wins the Video Experience, Games Experience and Voice App Experience awards. These measures quantify the experience while streaming videos, playing multiplayer mobile games and using over-the-top (OTT) voice apps, when connected to a mobile network. Viettel Mobile's score of 69.9 points (out of 100) on Video Experience places in the Very Good category, alongside Vinaphone and MobiFone. Correspondingly the operator’s Voice App Experience score (82.1 points) places in the Good category alongside Mobifone.

Introduction

In efforts to commercialize 5G nationwide, Vietnamese mobile network operators have recently signed an agreement to share network infrastructure and deployment costs for future rollouts. As operators are planning to use mmWave for 5G, which requires more base stations due to its limited coverage properties, sharing infrastructure will not only reduce investment costs but could potentially boost the rollout process. While 5G may be the key area of focus for operators in Vietnam, 4G and 3G continue to play a vital role because these are the mobile technologies that consumers spend most of their time connected to.

In this report, we've analyzed the real-world mobile network experience on the country’s four national operators — MobiFone, Vietnamobile, Viettel Mobile and Vinaphone — in the 90 days starting May 1, 2021 and ending July 29, 2021 to see how they measure up. A quick look at our awards table shows that Viettel Mobile remains the dominant operator when it comes to Vietnam’s mobile network experience. Viettel Mobile successfully holds on to six outright wins, while MobiFone remains the sole winner of the Upload Speed Experience award.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
