Key Findings

KPN and T-Mobile jointly win the Download Speed Experience award

Our KPN and T-Mobile users continue to experience the fastest download speeds, this time with scores exceeding an impressive 68 Mbps. However, when we analyzed the overall download speeds experienced by our 5G users — Download Speed Experience – 5G Users — those on KPN observed the fastest speeds (127.9 Mbps), well ahead of the 107.1 Mbps and 70.9 Mbps seen by 5G users on T-Mobile and Vodafone’s networks, respectively.

KPN users saw the fastest average upload speeds

KPN is the outright winner of the Upload Speed Experience award for the second report in a row, this time with a score of 16.5 Mbps — 1.9 Mbps faster than the speeds experienced by our users on second-placed T-Mobile’s network. There was no statistical difference between the overall upload speeds observed by our KPN and T-Mobile 5G users, but their scores of 32.6 Mbps and 29.6 Mbps, respectively, were roughly double the average upload speeds seen across all our users on their networks.

T-Mobile’s Video Experience winning streak continues

T-Mobile is once again the outright winner of the Video Experience award, this time with a lead of at least 1.1 points over its rivals. The operator has now won the award for four reports in a row, making it the only operator to have held the award since our March 2020 report.

Introduction

Little has changed since we last looked at the Dutch mobile network experience, to the point where our awards table is completely unchanged since our last report. Looking at our experiential metrics, all the Netherlands’ national operators remain locked in three-way ties for both Games Experience and Voice App Experience, while T-Mobile is still the outright winner of the Video Experience award. All three mobile operators’ scores for 4G Coverage Experience have not changed since our last report so KPN is still the outright winner of this award. Meanwhile, T-Mobile and Vodafone remain joint winners of the 4G Availability award, with a lead of 1.1-1.6 percentage points over KPN.

KPN announced in July that it will stop providing 3G services on 31 March 2022 — two months later than its previous target — and that its 2G network will still be available until at least April 2025. T-Mobile began shutting down its 2G network on June 1, 2021, while Vodafone took its 3G network off air back in February 2020. Ending support for legacy network generations is important as it allows more spectrum to be dedicated to modern technologies used by the majority of mobile users, enhancing their experience.

In this report, we've analyzed our data gathered in the 90 day period starting May 1, 2021, and ending July 29, 2021, to see how the Netherlands’ three national operators — KPN, T-Mobile and Vodafone — stack up. Our overall metrics include measurements from our 5G users and we have also analyzed the overall experience of our 5G users across all generations of network technology — weighted by the proportion of time that they spent on each of them (our 5G Users metrics). We have published a companion report — Netherlands 5G Experience Report September 2021 — which analyzes the experience of our 5G users on 5G networks.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
