Introduction
A quick look at our latest award table shows that Zong remains the dominant operator when it comes to mobile network experience in Pakistan. The operator wins four of Opensignal’s awards outright — down from the five seen in our last report — and also claims three joint wins. While Zong continues to solely lead in Video Experience, 4G Availability and 4G Coverage Experience, it now wins the Download Speed Experience award, which it shared with Jazz in the last report. However, this time Zong has to share the Games and Upload Speed Experience awards with other operators. Jazz has forced a statistical tie with Zong for the Upload Speed Experience award. This means another shared victory for these operators this time around, next to the Voice App Experience, for which Jazz and Zong remain in a dead heat. Jazz and Ufone have also forced a statistical tie with Zong in Games Experience, which means all three operators are joint winners of this award category.
In this report, we've analyzed our data gathered in the 90 days (from April 1, 2021, to June 29, 2021) to compare the mobile network experience of Pakistan’s four national operators: Jazz, Telenor, Ufone and Zong. As this period includes the re-introduction of restriction measures in response to the third COVID-19 wave, it also indicates to what degree Pakistan’s mobile experience has weathered the resulting changes in our users’ data consumption habits and locations.
The 4G Availability in Pakistan has declined across all four national networks. The average download speeds observed by our users across three networks — Jazz, Zong and Ufone — dipped between 5.1% and 12.2%, and those seen by our Telenor users increased by 5.7%, while our users’ average upload speeds fell between 8%, on Ufone, and 13.7%, on Zong’s network, and increased slightly for those on Jazz and Telenor’s networks.
Voice App Experience, Video Experience and 4G Availability scores were affected across the board. However, 4G Coverage Experience improved by 0.1 points across three networks, except Ufone. Overall the mobile experience in Pakistan has been largely resilient, given the mobile data consumption per user has increased significantly since 2020 — 7 GB/month to 8 GB/month.
