Key Findings

All Finnish operators rate Excellent in Video Experience and Telia wins the award

Telia is the winner of our Video Experience award with a score of 77.7 (on a scale of 0-100), while Elisa and DNA shared the second place with statistically tied scores of 76.4 and 76.3 points, respectively. Our users in Finland enjoyed an Excellent Video Experience (75 and above) — the highest possible rating in the category — on all three national operators. This means our users had a very consistent experience across all video streaming providers and resolutions tested, with fast loading times and almost non-existent stalling.

Elisa and Telia share the lead in Games Experience

Our users in Finland enjoyed a statistically similar Games Experience on Elisa and Telia, as the two operators share the win with their respective scores of 75.8 and 74.4 (on a scale of 0-100). DNA scored 74.2 points in Games Experience, which means it was just a breath away from making it a three-way joint win. Opensignal’s Games Experience quantifies the experience of real-time multiplayer mobile gaming on an operator’s network. It represents the experience of popular genres of mobile games such as battle royale games like COD mobile or Garena FreeFire and MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) titles like Arena of Valor.

DNA is Finland’s fastest mobile operator both in download and upload

Our users observed the fastest Download Speed Experience of 40.4 Mbps on DNA’s network. Elisa placed second with a score of 37.4 Mbps, while Telia followed behind at 34.5 Mbps. DNA also wins our Upload Speed Experience award with a score of 13.4 Mbps, while our users on Telia and Elisa on average experienced statistically tied upload speeds of 11.2 Mbps and 10.8 Mbps, respectively.

Elisa wins 4G Availability and shares 4G Coverage Experience with Telia

Elisa leads in both of our measures of a mobile network’s extent by winning 4G Availability with a score of 94.7% and sharing our 4G Coverage Experience award with Telia, as both operators scored 8.9 on a 10-point scale. Our 4G Availability metric shows the proportion of time users with a 4G device and subscription have a 4G connection, while 4G Coverage Experience analyzes the locations where customers of a network operator received a 4G signal relative to the locations visited by users of all network operators.

DNA, Elisa and Telia jointly win Voice App Experience

Finland’s three national operators share together our first Voice App Experience award with scores of 81.6-82.1 points, and they all placed in the Good category (80-87). Opensignal's Voice App Experience measures the quality of experience for over-the-top (OTT) voice services — mobile voice apps such as WhatsApp, Skype, Facebook Messenger etc.

Introduction

Our first analysis of the mobile experience at the operator-level in Finland reveals a tense competition among the three national operators as they all win multiple awards. DNA featured as the fastest mobile network for both average download and upload speeds, while sharing the victory in Voice App Experience. Elisa solely wins 4G Availability, while sharing Games Experience, Voice App Experience and 4G Coverage Experience. Telia solely wins Video Experience, while sharing the victory in Games Experience, Voice App Experience and 4G Coverage Experience.

All three national mobile operators in Finland are busy deploying their 5G networks in the country, as they all secured the same amount of spectrum in the recent 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz 5G spectrum auctions.

In this report we have looked at the 90-day data period beginning February 1, 2021 and ending May 1, 2021, and measured the user experience across all our key metrics for Finland’s three leading operators — DNA, Elisa and Telia. We have used 5G measurements in addition to those from previous generations of mobile network technology when determining the overall scores for each award category.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
