Key Findings

Vodafone wins the Video Experience award, with a Very Good experience

With a score of 74.2, Vodafone has a clear lead over second placed One's 68.1, and ALBtelecom's 61.6 on our 100point scale. Vodafone just misses out on reaching the Excellent category indicating there is still room to improve. Video Experience uses real-world video streaming tests to quantify our mobile users' perceived video experience using an ITU-based methodology.

One holds Vodafone to a tie, to jointly win the Download Speed Experience award

On download speed, One and Vodafone's scores are statistically tied with Download Speed Experience scores of 33.3 Mbps and 32.2 Mbps respectively. This different result when compared with Video Experience demonstrates that high download speeds does not automatically mean users will enjoy a great mobile video streaming experience. Our users connecting with ALBtelecom saw an average speed approximately 20 Mbps slower than the speed our users experienced when using One and Vodafone.

The Games Experience award is won by One

For multiplayer mobile gaming, our users on One recorded a score of 73.4, slightly ahead of Vodafone's score of 70, with ALBtelecom again in third place with a score of 47.9. Games Experience reflects the online gaming experience of popular categories of games such as Battle Royale (e.g. Fortnite or PUBG) or MOBA (e.g. Arena of Valor) when playing over a mobile connection. Both Vodafone and One have placed in the Fair category, meaning that most users felt able to control the game play without much automatic control to compensate for network issues, but the majority of players noticed a delay between their actions and game outcomes.

Sharing photos, documents or videos online is faster with One according to our users

The Upload Speed Experience award is won by One with a speed of 10.9 Mbps. The margin between One's score and Vodafone score of 9.1 Mbps is great enough that One wins this speed award outright, unlike the tie for Download Speed Experience. Upload speed is important for business users sharing office documents or connecting to virtual private networks and for social media users wishing to upload photos and videos to Instagram, Tik Tok or Twitter.

The contest for 4G Availability and 4G Coverage Experience has also been closely fought

The time our users spend connected to 4G — 4G Availability — is statistically tied between One (87.6%) and Vodafone (87.4%) and so both operators jointly win the Opensignal 4G Availability award. However, when we consider how users experience the geographical extent of 4G networks, we find Vodafone edges ahead to win the 4G Coverage Experience award with a score of 7.8 on a 10 point scale with One second on 7.4.

Introduction

In Opensignal's first mobile network experience report on Albania we find fierce competition between One and Vodafone across all our award categories. Vodafone wins two awards outright, but One seizes three, and the operators share the remaining two awards.

With 5G yet to launch in Albania, users must rely on 4G. And it's here where ALBtelecom falls most noticeably behind the two market leaders with much lower scores for both 4G Availability — the time our users spend connected to 4G — and on 4G Coverage Experience, as well as for Download Speed and Upload Speed Experience. In other markets, we've seen 5G open opportunities for challenger operators to jump up the rankings and win Opensignal awards so all is far from lost for ALBtelecom despite its lack of awards on this occasion.

However, 4G will likely remain the dominant network type for some time because of challenges in clearing 700 MHz spectrum for 5G services, the relatively recent launch of 4G services in 2015, and the timing of government 5G targets. In the National Plan for Sustainable Development of Infrastructure the goal is for 5G to cover one major city, the major transport corridors and other key strategic locations by the end of 2025.

In this report on mobile network experience we analyze real-world measurements recorded by our users between in the 90 days between January 1 and March 31, 2021 across all mobile technology generations.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
