Key Findings

TDC wins Download Speed Experience by a large margin

With an average download speed of 59.1 Mbps our TDC users enjoyed a much faster speed than our users on any of the other operators in Denmark. Telenor, 3 and Telia users experienced speeds over 20 Mbps slower with statistically tied scores of 37.2 Mbps, 36 Mbps and 35 Mbps respectively.

Games Experience was tightly contested with Telia jointly winning the award with TDC

Opensignal's Games Experience measures the multiplayer mobile gaming experience of smartphone users, reflecting the playing experience of popular genres of games such as Fortnite, PUBG or Arena of Valor. On our one hundred point scale, TDC and Telia statistically tie with scores of 80.9 and 78.9. Our user's experience on both the leading operators, as well as our users on Telenor, rated as Good, while our 3 users scored more lowly in the Fair category.

All four operators rated as Excellent for mobile Video Experience

Opensignal actively measures the video streaming experience of our users using an International Telecommunications Union (ITU) based methodology. However, while all four operators' experience was in the same category, TDC narrowly won the Video Experience award with a score of 79.9 on our one hundred point scale, ahead of Telia with 77.5, Telenor on 76.3 and 3 scoring 76.1.

TDC's lead on Upload Speed Experience is much narrower than for download speed

While TDC won Download Speed Experience with a score 59% faster than the next operator, its 17.1 Mbps Upload Speed Experience score is only 13% faster than the nearest other operator's score, Telia. And, our users on Telenor and 3 have an experience that's close to TDC, with speeds of 14.1 Mbps and 13.7 Mbps respectively.

On network reach, 3 fell behind the other three operators

Opensignal considers two key measures for the extent of a network and on both, the experience of 3's users lagged behind our users on TDC, Telenor and Telia. On 4G Availability — the time users spend connected to a 4G network — users on 3, scored 88.4% compared with over 94% on the other operators. We see similar results for 4G Coverage Experience, with 3 scoring 7.6 on a ten point scale, compared with TDC's winning score of 9.5, Telia's score of 9.1 and Telenor's 8.5. 4G Coverage Experience analyzes the locations where customers of a network operator received a 4G signal relative to the locations visited by users of all network operators on a ten point scale.

Introduction

In Opensignal's first mobile network experience report on Denmark, we find TDC winning the largest share of awards. However, Telia, Telenor and 3 all jointly won one or more categories with TDC.

The arrival of 5G opens up new opportunities for each operator to compete and advance the quality of the mobile network experience in Denmark. All four operators have very recently launched 5G: TDC, Telia and Telenor in September 2020, followed by 3 in December. In other countries, we have seen 5G offer a massive jump forward in speeds, and we are starting to see improvements in other aspects of the mobile experience as well.

5G measurements contribute to the overall scores included in this report. Our results in this report are based on measurements collected across a ninety day period between October 1 and December 29, 2020.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
