Key Findings

Turkcell users continue to enjoy the best Video Experience in Turkey

Turkcell won our award second time in a row with a score of 72.6 on a 100-point scale — a decline of less than a point since our last report. Meanwhile, its rivals Vodafone and Türk Telekom both saw an incremental increase of 0.8 and 0.3 points respectively, bringing their overall scores to 68.3 and 69.9 respectively. With scores lying in the range of 65 to 75, all three operators earned a Very Good rating. This means that our users in Turkey generally observed fast loading times and only occasional stalling, regardless of their preferred network, however, the experience might have been somewhat inconsistent across users, video providers, and resolutions.

Vodafone wins our Games Experience award

Vodafone has come on top of our Games Experience by overtaking our previous winner, Türk Telekom, which is now in a statistical tie for second place with Turkcell. This measure of the mobile network experience quantifies the experience when playing real-time multiplayer mobile gaming genres such as Battle Royale and MOBA on mobile devices connected to servers located around the world.

Türk Telekom draws level with Turkcell on Upload Speed Experience

In our previous report, Turkcell won both our speed awards. But this time, Türk Telekom has eaten into its lead on Upload Speed Experience and forced a statistical tie. This was due to 0.9 Mbps improvement in Türk Telekom’s score (9 Mbps), while Turkcell’s score was unchanged. Vodafone’s score also improved by 0.2 Mbps but remained more than 1 Mbps behind its rivals.

Vodafone breaks through the 90% milestone in 4G Availability

Vodafone users reported an improvement of 1.7 percentage points, since the last report, which was good enough to push the operator’s 4G Availability score beyond the 90% mark, and also increase its lead over Turkcell — from 1.2 to 2.8 percentage points — with a score of 90.9%. This means that our 4G users on Vodafone Turkey are able to access 4G networks, nine out of ten times. While Turkcell was second-placed with a score of 88.2%, Türk Telekom was below the 85% mark.

Türk Telekom is eating away at Turkcells’s lead on Download Speed Experience

In our April report, Turkcell commanded a significant 5.5 Mbps (29.1%) lead over Türk Telekom on Download Speed Experience. In this report, while Turkcell has won our Download Speed Experience award with an impressive score of 25.7 Mbps, its lead over Türk Telekom has shrunk to just 2.4 Mbps. This is because Türk Telekom’s score boosted up by 4.4Mbps, while Turkcell’s grew by 1.3 Mbps. If this trend continues, Türk Telekom might overtake Turkcell on Download Speed Experience.

Introduction

In our second look at Turkey’s mobile network experience, we've analyzed our data gathered in the 90 days from the start of August 2020 to see how Turkey’s three national operators —Turkcell, Türk Telekom and Vodafone — measure up.

We have seen a lot of change since our last report. Vodafone swept away our Games Experience award, which was held by Türk Telekom earlier. At the same time, Türk Telekom was able to force Turkcell into a statistical tie for Upload Speed Experience. While these changes are visible on our awards table, we found a strong competition brewing under the surface; With our Türk Telekom users reporting significant improvement in Download Speed Experience, the operator has eroded much of Turkcell’s lead in this category. This indicates that Turkcell has started to lose its dominance that we had seen in our first report.

In the future, as Turkey prepares to launch 5G next year, it will be interesting to see how this competition between operators develops and how it will affect the mobile network landscape and user experience in the country.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
