Key Findings

Our Argentinean users’ average overall download speeds have increased significantly

Despite 2020 being a year marked by COVID-19, our users on all three operators’ networks have seen their speeds increase since our last report. Our Personal users saw the largest improvement, as their speeds rose by an impressive 3.4 Mbps (15.7%). Claro and Movistar saw their Download Speed Experience scores increase more modestly — but still significantly — with increases of 2.1 Mbps (12.8%) and 1.5 Mbps (9.8%), respectively. As a result of these changes, Personal’s lead over second-placed Claro has increased by 1.3 Mbps to 6.5 Mbps.

Personal has overtaken Movistar on Games Experience and is hot on Claro’s heels

While Claro has won our Games Experience award for the second time in a row, Personal has knocked Movistar off the number two spot and is not far behind Claro on this measure of the mobile experience. Personal has performed a similar feat for Voice App Experience, cutting Claro’s lead to 2 points, down from the 5.5 that it enjoyed in our previous report.

Movistar has made good progress on Video Experience but there’s still a gap to close

Our Movistar users were the only ones to observe an improvement in their Video Experience since our last report, with the operator’s score increasing by 4.3 points (7.4%). In contrast, both our Personal and Claro users saw theirs decline by 0.5 points. The gap between Movistar and second-placed Claro’s scores has therefore dropped by 4.8 points — from the 13.3 points seen in our last report to 8.6 points in our current reporting period. Meanwhile, Personal’s score remains 4% higher than Claro’s.

Personal pushes further ahead of the pack on Upload Speed Experience

In our last report, Personal commanded a decent — if not spectacular — 0.6 Mbps (9.9%) lead over second-placed Claro for Upload Speed Experience. This time around, our Personal users clocked up average upload speeds of 8.2 Mbps — 1.2 Mbps (17.2%) higher than those observed last time around. As Movistar and Claro’s scores only rose by 0.4 Mbps and 0.1 Mbps, respectively, Personal’s lead rose by 1.1 Mbps to 1.8 Mbps and its score is 27.4% higher than Claro’s score of 6.4 Mbps.

Both Movistar and Personal have made gains on 4G Availability

Our Movistar and Personal users have increased the proportion of time that they spent connected to 4G services — 4G Availability — by a modest 1.4 and 1.3 percentage points since our last report, while Claro’s score is unchanged. This means that Argentina is still some way away from having more than one operator (Personal) with a score of more than 90%. In addition, Movistar has overtaken Claro and has moved into second place, while Personal now commands a lead of 8.3 percentage points, up 0.7 percentage points from last time.

Introduction

Our awards table has remained unchanged since our last report, with Personal holding onto the lion’s share of awards — namely Video Experience, Download Speed Experience, Upload Speed Experience, 4G Availability and 4G Coverage Experience. Meanwhile, Claro is still gripping onto two out of our three experiential metrics — Games Experience and Voice App Experience. However, when we look below the winners’ podiums we can see more change, with Personal taking the second spot for both Games Experience and Voice App Experience from Movistar. Similarly, Movistar has replaced Claro as the second-highest scoring operator for 4G Availability.

Personal has strengthened its grip on both our speed awards and the operator has held the top spot for our Download Speed Experience and Upload Speed Experience awards since December 2016 and June 2019, respectively.

Our Argentinean users’ mobile experience has held up well in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, as demonstrated by the fact that our users on all three operators’ networks have seen their average download speeds increase.

However, the medium-to-long term picture is perhaps less positive. The price-freeze that has been imposed by the government until the end of the year on mobile, broadband and pay-TV services is likely to put pressure on operators’ finances, especially given the high level of inflation and the way in which the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has eaten into consumers’ spending power. To defend their profitability, Argentina’s operators will need to emphasize the mobile network experience when communicating with their customers. Without this approach, it will be hard to build a business case to improve the quality of Argentina's mobile network experience.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
