Key Findings

Telenor breaks a three-way tie to win Games Experience outright

In our last report, three operators — Mytel, Ooredoo and Telenor — were statistically tied for the Games Experience award, but this time Telenor is the clear winner with a 2.5 point lead over second-placed Mytel. Opensignal’s Games Experience metric is a measure of how mobile users experience real-time multiplayer mobile gaming on an operator’s cellular network.

Telenor goes from last place to win Download Speed Experience this time

Telenor, which came fourth in our previous report for Download Speed Experience, has managed to jump into first place for this measure of the mobile experience by virtue of an impressive 4.8 Mbps improvement in its score, aided by falls in the speeds observed by our Mytel and Ooredoo users of 3.1 Mbps and 2.4 Mbps respectively.

Mytel is forced to share the top spot for Video Experience with Telenor

Last time, Mytel won the Video Experience award outright, but in this report it and Telenor are joint winners. Telenor’s score for this measure of the mobile experience rose by 3.8 points, while Mytel’s dropped by 4.9 points. The two operators are the only ones to place in the Very Good category for Video Experience, with MPT and Ooredoo having to content themselves with a Good rating.

Voice App Experience scores drop across the board, but Telenor has weathered the storm the best

While our users observed declines in their Voice App Experience across all four operators, the reduction in scores varied between operators, with our Mytel and Ooredoo users seeing drops of 2 and 3.9 points, respectively, while their counterparts on MPT and Telenor observed declines of just 0.1 and 0.3 points. While MPT saw the smallest drop in its Voice App Experience score, when the dust settled Telenor’s score was the highest at 79.8 — 1.1 points ahead of second-placed Mytel, which won the award in our previous report.

Mytel holds onto the 4G Availability award.

Progress has been mixed on 4G Availability, but our users on two out of four operators spent more than 90% of their time connected to 4G. While our users observed slight declines in the proportion of time they spent connected to 4G services — 4G Availability — while using Mytel and Telenor’s networks, our MPT and Ooredoo users saw increases of 0.8 and 1.2 percentage points, respectively. While these were modest improvements, the latter was enough to push Ooredoo’s score above the 90% mark; while Mytel’s score is down from the high of 96.1% that our users observed in our last report but is still above 95%. This means that our users spent more than 90% of their time connected to 4G on two out of four operators’ networks. In addition, Mytel has held onto the 4G Availability award for the fifth report in a row.

Introduction

Since our last report, Telenor has made great progress — the average overall download speeds observed by our users on its network rose by a remarkable 4.8 Mbps, allowing it to move from last place to first place for Download Speed Experience. In addition, across many of our metrics our Telenor users’ mobile network experience proved to be more resilient than their counterparts on other networks. As a consequence, Telenor won the Games Experience award outright after statistically tying for it in our previous report with Ooredoo and Mytel. Telenor also took three awards from Mytel: Voice App Experience, Download Speed Experience and Upload Speed Experience. Finally, Telenor also managed to tie with Mytel on Video Experience. As a result, Mytel’s haul of awards has dropped from six awards to two — 4G Availability and 4G Coverage Experience.

Speaking of 4G Availability, our users spent more than 90% of their time connected to 4G services while using Mytel and Ooredoo’s networks and both Telenor and MPT are less than one percentage point away from breaching the 90% mark.

While there has been some progress since our last report, in many cases operators’ scores have declined. This has pushed Ooredoo down a category for Video Experience — from Very Good to Good, which puts it in line with MPT but behind Telenor and Mytel and it means that our users across all four operators observed an Acceptable Voice App Experience and a Poor Games Experience. The former means that our users were generally able to comprehend without repetition, though some may have experienced perceptible call quality impairments such as clicking sounds of short duration or distortion. A Poor Games Experience means that most users found this level of experience unacceptable and many users felt a lack of controllability in the Games Experience.

One factor that has contributed to the drop in scores is the COVID-19 pandemic,as the number of locally-transmitted cases in the country has been increasing rapidly since mid-August. We have seen COVID-19 related changes in our users’ mobile network experience in other countries that occur due to a combination of differences in data consumption and our users’ locations. Speaking of the latter, the pandemic prompted a stay-at-home order in Yangon, the country’s largest city, which came into effect on Sep. 21, 2020

In this report, we have examined the mobile network experience of the four main mobile network operators in Myanmar: MPT, Mytel, Ooredoo and Telenor, over a period of 90 days beginning July 1, 2020 to see how they fared.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
