Key Findings

Jazz secures Opensignal’s Download Speed Experience award

It was a two-horse race between Jazz and Zong in our Download Speed Experience category. While both operators were toe-to-toe, Jazz won first place with our users on its network experiencing average speeds of 10.8 Mbps. Zong finished second in this race with 10.2 Mbps. On the other hand, the Download Speed Experience of the two remaining operators — Ufone and Telenor — was less than half of Jazz’s at 4.7 Mbps and 4.2 Mbps respectively.

Jazz is Pakistan’s Badshah of speeds

Our Upload Speed Experience was also dominated by Jazz. The operator’s winning score of 4 Mbps was at least twice as fast as Ufone’s and Telenor’s scores, which stood at 1.7 and 1.8 respectively. Zong was the only operator who came close to challenging Jazz at 3.4 Mbps. That said, when we split upload speeds by technology, it was noteworthy that no operator managed to cross the 1.5 Mbps mark in 3G Upload Speed Experience.

Pakistan rated Fair in Video Experience

The typical Video Experience of users on all four operators’ in Pakistan is Fair (40-55) on our 100-point scale, which means that video streamed over mobile phones is slow to load and encounters frequent interruptions, especially at higher resolutions. With scores just above 50 points, Jazz and Zong statistically tied for our award in this category, leaving Ufone and Telenor behind by more than 9 points.

Zong commands 4G Availability

With a score of 82.6%, Zong became the undisputed winner of our 4G Availability award, meaning our users, on average, connected to 4G services on Zong’s network 82.6% of the time. While Zong was the only Pakistani operator to have surpassed the 80% milestone, its closest rival Jazz missed the same by less than a percentage point. On the other hand, Ufone, who launched their 4G services early last year, scored notably low in this category. The operator’s 4G Availability score of 60% alongside their 4G Coverage score of 1.9 points (out of 10) indicates a very limited 4G roll-out in the country

A comfortable victory for Ufone in Latency Experience

Our Pakistani users, on average, enjoyed the lowest latencies on Ufone’s network. The winning operator clocked an average response time of 58.9 milliseconds, which was nearly 9ms faster than its closest rival Jazz’s score of 67.7ms.

Introduction

Pakistan is an emerging mobile market, with all the challenges and opportunities this entails. With digitalization at its early stages, the 3G/4G penetration rate in the country stands at 35.21%, which means more than 74 million subscribers are connected. But this is set to grow through the government's Vision 2025 initiatives, which considers Information and communications technologies (ICT) the key drivers of innovation, economic growth, competitiveness and greater social inclusion. And mobile operators will have a fundamental role to play in fulfilling these ambitious objectives in the next five years.

We have analyzed Pakistan’s mobile networks on several occasions in our global reports. But in this report, we've delved deeper to analyze the mobile network experience of our Pakistani users, across the country, over the 90 days from the start of October 1, 2019, to see how the four operators— Jazz, Ufone, Zong and Telenor — stack up on real-world measurements.

And in our first look at Pakistan’s mobile market, we saw a fierce competition between two operators in most of our award categories. Jazz and Zong came head to head in Video Experience, and won awards in two categories individually. While Jazz showed its strength in speeds, Zong differentiated itself in 4G Availability and Coverage Experience. Ufone was the only other operator to have won an award — Latency Experience.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
