Key Findings

Vinaphone and MobiFone achieve a Good Video Experience rating

Viettel kept our Video Experience award — but this metric is more polarized than before, with all but Vietnamobile now falling in the Good range, where video loads quickly and with little stalling. While the top three operators increased their score by at least 3 points each, Vietnamobile saw no statistical change in its score and is now further behind its competition.

Viettel keeps our award despite falling 4G Availability

While still 11 percentage points ahead of the competition on 4G Availability, Viettel's score fell by 1.4 percentage points compared with its competitors since our last report. MobiFone and Vietnamobile grew by over 2 percentage points and almost 5 points respectively, and are now tied for third place. Vinaphone on the other hand saw its 4G Availability score fall 2.8 percentage points despite increasing its number of base stations. For Viettel, 4G Availability is the key to maintaining its lead in Download Speed Experience because 4G connections support higher speeds than older 3G technologies, so this metric is an important focus for Vietnam's operators.

Viettel hangs on to our Download Speed award thanks to superior 4G Availability

Viettel wins our Download Speed Experience award with an average of 18.5 Mbps. However, with the fastest average 4G Download Speed of 27 Mbps, Vinaphone should have what it takes to claim the title for the fastest overall Download Speed Experience in Vietnam. At 6.1 Mbps, its 3G speed is weighing it down significantly against Viettel’s 7.5 Mbps. If Vinaphone manages to increase its 4G Availability while maintaining its lead in 4G Download Speed, it should be able to overtake Viettel to win our Download Speed Experience crown in the future.

MobiFone leaps in Upload Speed Experience to put pressure on the leaders

Viettel and Vinaphone remain tied for our Upload Speed Experience award — but now a third player is hot on their heels. MobiFone was the only carrier to achieve significant gains in Upload Speed Experience since our last report , and is now only just over 1 Mbps behind the leaders. As 3G Upload Speeds remained virtually unchanged across the board, a 1 Mbps improvement in MobiFone’s 4G Upload Speed, combined with a 1 Mbps decrease in that of Viettel and Vinaphone, has made for a tighter race for our overall Upload Speed Experience award, although there is still a way to go for MobiFone to catch up.

Introduction

In this report, we've seen the same awards table as in our first report on the Mobile Experience in Vietnam six months ago. Viettel is ahead in all but Upload Speed Experience, where it was held to a draw, Vietnamobile is lagging behind in most metrics, while Vinaphone and MobiFone saw mixed results.

Although our awards table looks the same, that doesn’t mean there haven’t been any changes: the contenders in 4G Availability are gaining ground, and overall user experience is seeing solid improvements for all carriers. It would not come as a surprise if we saw more ties in our third report on the Vietnam market six months from now.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
