Key Findings

Kölbi boosts 4G Availability to score a draw with Movistar

In the last 6 months, Kölbi improved its 4G Availability score by more than 5 percentage points to catch up with its rival Movistar, with users on both operators spending close to 70% of the time connected to 4G. While Claro was behind the other Costa Rican operators, it showed the biggest improvement by scoring 54.1% in 4G Availability, an increase of nearly 8%. Movistar’s score remained more or less unchanged.

A Good Video Experience rating for Kölbi

Kölbi scored 55.7 (out of 100) in our Video Experience metric, just managing to reach a Good Video Experience rating (55-65) with a substantial lead over its rivals. Claro and Movistar scored 41.4 and 44.2 points respectively, landing them with Fair Video Experience ratings (40-55) of our scale, meaning Video load times were sluggish, stops and stutters mid-stream were to varying degrees common and connections often had trouble coping with higher-resolution formats.

No competition for Kölbi in our speed awards

It was an easy win for Kölbi in both our Download and Upload Speed Experience metrics, especially in download, where its score of 15.8 Mbps was twice as fast as any of its rivals. While Claro’s Download Speed Experience score was 7 Mbps — a 40% improvement from our previous report — Movistar’s Download Speed remained almost unchanged. Our users on Kölbi's network saw Upload Speed Experience scores averaging 5.2 Mbps — at least 40% faster than either of the operator's rivals.

Close call for Kölbi in Latency Experience award

It was a tight race between Movistar and Kölbi, where the latter edged out the former for our Latency Experience Award with a score of 55.7 milliseconds. Claro finished last in this competition with a score of 78.9ms.

Introduction

We've noticed a consistent trend since our report on Costa Rica in June 2017 — the dominance in our award categories has been shifting from Movistar to Kölbi. In Opensignal’s latest look at Costa Rica, Kölbi swept up almost all our awards and challenged Movistar in the 4G Availability category. In this report we’ve analyzed the mobile network experience offered by Costa Rica’s three national operators: Claro, Kölbi, and Movistar over a period of 90 days from the beginning of February 2019.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
