Key Findings

Viettel has established a big lead in 4G Availability

With a score of 86%, Viettel stood head and shoulders above its rivals in our 4G Availability metric. Second-place finisher Vinaphone was 10 percentage points behind the leader in our analysis, while MobiFone and Vietnamobile both scored below 70%. Viettel has clearly deployed a much more accessible 4G service, according to our measurements.

Huge variations in average speed exist among Vietnam's operators

While we often see a range of speeds across a country's different operators, in Vietnam the differences between fastest and slowest average connection speed is quite stark. The leaders in our Download Speed Experience and Upload Speed Experience categories averaged connections four-to-five-times faster than the last placed finishers, according to our analysis.

Video Experience ranges from Poor to Good in Vietnam

Depending on the operator, the typical Video Experience in Vietnam can vary from Poor, in which case video is very slow to load and experiences frequent interruptions, to Good, where video loads much more quickly and stalls much less often.

Viettel is the operator to beat in nearly every metric

Though Viettel's biggest lead was in 4G Availability, it outdid its peers in nearly every single one of our metrics, also winning our Video Experience, Download Speed Experience and Latency Experience awards outright. In the final metric, Upload Speed Experience, Viettel shared the award with Vinaphone as both operators averaged upload connections of 6.1 Mbps.

Introduction

In our first look at the Vietnamese mobile market, Opensignal found an operator landscape characterized by large extremes. In every category we found operators that excelled in our metrics and others that fell flat. Viettel in particular stood out, winning four of our five awards outright, sometimes by very large margins. Vinaphone came in a strong second in several of our metrics, while MobiFone demonstrated both strengths and weaknesses, depending on the category. Vietnamobile, however, clearly has some catching up to do. It fell far below its rivals in every single one of our metrics.

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
