Canada, August 2022, Mobile Network Experience
Last summer, Canadian carriers bid billions of dollars to obtain spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band, which is crucial for 5G in the country. As a result of this auction, the big three carriers – Bell, Rogers and Telus – walked away with 80% of the total spectrum on auction and have recently started using it for 5G.

Following last summer’s 3.5GHz spectrum auction, Canadian carriers have recently begun the process of deploying this new mid-band spectrum for 5G services. Rogers claims to be the first to launch mid-band 5G — with its first location going live in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

Opensignal data shows that users at NHL arenas in both Canada and the U.S. had a significantly better experience when connected to 5G compared to the overall experience of all users at those venues. But our data also shows that users’ experience varied depending on their choice of carrier.
