Localized analysis reveals huge network experience gaps between mobile users in the U.S.

In this new analysis, Opensignal has segmented the mobile network experience of our U.S. users, to look at their distribution across different quality categories, at various geographical levels — ranging from the national level down to a city borough. We focused on three key metrics, essential for understanding the potential of meaningful mobile connectivity for our users — Video Experience, Download Speed Experience, and Time with no signal.

How the 5G experience compares across 50 states and 250 US cities

As U.S. carriers continue to hit new milestones in their 5G network rollouts, Opensignal has now conducted the most comprehensive analysis of smartphone users’ 5G mobile experience across the U.S. We included all 50 states and as many as 250 cities in this new study. While 5G was present to some extent everywhere, the quality of 5G experience varied significantly. Our 5G users on the East Coast generally had a better 5G experience, followed by users on the West Coast and in the Great Lakes region.

Parts of rural Germany see less than 50% 4G Availability

In our recent analysis, we found that the average 4G Availability in rural Germany was 73.5% experienced by our users, compared with 82.2% in urban areas. In this follow-up insight, we analyzed the range and spread of rural 4G Availability — which is a measure of the proportion of time our users with a 4G device and subscription were able to get a 4G connection — in the more remote parts of the country.

The Mid-Atlantic is a hot zone for mobile download speed in the US

Only one state or commonwealth can claim to have the fastest mobile broadband speeds in the union, and that state is New Jersey. In OpenSignal's analysis of the lower 48, we found that the Garden State outperformed its peers in both our overall speed metrics, with an average download connection of 24.1 Mbps and an average upload connection of 7.1 Mbps.
