South African networks see the worst 4G signal strength but fastest 4G download speeds at night

Opensignal analyzed how energy usage changes on South African networks throughout the day. We observe that South African operators use less spectrum and carrier bands at night, while the 4G signal strength is also the weakest at night. For the purpose of the analysis, we focus on 4G metrics, as only MTN and Vodacom have launched commercial mobile 5G services in South Africa.

South Africa’s smartphone users experience faster download speeds on mobile than Wifi

Opensignal analyzed the download speeds that South African users experience when they connect to mobile networks compared to Wifi, and found that cellular technology provided faster download speeds at all times of the day. Opensignal's data shows our smartphone users on average enjoy 14.8 Mbps in download speed when they access the internet using cellular networks — which we measured by looking at all 3G and 4G readings — but only 8.8 Mbps in download speed when connected to Wifi.

 

MTN takes the prize in a close South Africa video experience race

OpenSignal's recent report on the South Africa mobile market showed something of a two-horse race. While Vodacom dominated our awards table, taking six out of seven of our mobile experience crowns, MTN won our coveted 4G availability award and came a close second in almost all our other categories. But in our new video experience analysis, MTN didn't have to settle for second in the awards table: it scored a narrow win over Vodacom in our overall video experience measurements.
