Posted: Nov 17, 2022

Opensignal has looked at the mobile network experience in seven of Colombia’s cities to compare the local mobile network experience our users had on four national operators — Claro, Movistar, Tigo and WOM. We covered the following Colombian cities: Barranquilla, Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Cali, Cartagena, Cúcuta and Medellín.

In this analysis, Opensignal has looked at how three national operators in Colombia use their spectrum holdings in one of the legacy 3G bands — 1900 MHz (band 2), also known as the PCS band. We observed that mobile operators have been shifting their use of this band from 3G to 4G technology and also have moved to larger channel widths for 4G connections which helps to boost the mobile experience of users.

Understanding mobile experience explains why users in Colombia switch mobile operators

In this new analysis, Opensignal has found that Colombian smartphone users that switched their mobile operator saw a significantly worse mobile experience than the average for their original operator before they switched. These Leavers spent more time without a signal and less time connected to 4G. Also, we found that while Leavers sometimes improved their experience after switching to a new operator, it depended on which operator they joined.

When it comes to mobile network speeds in Spain, it was something of a two-horse race in our last State of Mobile Networks report. Movistar won our 3G download speed award, Vodafone took both overall speed and 4G upload — but the two drew for our coveted 4G download speed prize. So we drilled down a bit deeper into our 4G download data by looking at their peak speeds, where we discovered another tie between these fierce Iberian rivals.

Got a massive file to upload or want to stream live video from your phone? In Mexico at least, Telcel is the operator best equipped to handle either feat, according to OpenSignal's latest tests. We put Mexico under the lens of our new experimental upload metric and found that in 4G, Telcel beats out both AT&T and Movistar, averaging upstream connections of 11.7 Mbps.

When it comes to the direction of mobile data, we're becoming a much more symmetrical society. We're not just surfing the internet and downloading video, we're creating content and streaming video from our phones. That means upload speed is becoming increasingly important when it comes to measuring the consumer mobile data experience.
