Benchmarking Malaysia’s 4G mobile network experience before the JENDELA initiative

Recently, the Government of Malaysia announced a multi-billion dollar national digital infrastructure plan, Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA), to improve the country’s digital infrastructure and connectivity. As a part of this approach, the initiative will work to strengthen existing 4G networks and establish a solid foundation for 5G.

Opensignal’s data shows that short-term variations in average mobile data consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic correlated with variations in our users’ average Download Speed Experience across multiple countries. In part, this is because other ways of improving capacity such as additional wireless spectrum, could not be brought into use quickly in most countries to help with changed mobile usage.

Maxis leads in Malaysia peak download speeds — but Celcom is close behind

Not all LTE networks are created equal, and few countries exemplify that maxim more than Malaysia. In OpenSignal’s analysis of peak download speeds in Malaysia, we found that there were vastly different capabilities across the six major operators’ networks. The fastest 4G peak speeds we measured were well over 70 Mbps, while the slowest were under 25 Mbps.
