Jakarta’s blackout had a nationwide impact on 3 and Indosat’s networks

Opensignal observed an impact on our Indonesian users’ experience following the massive electrical blackout which began just before midday on Sunday, August 4, local time. However, the resulting effects on mobile service we measured were not limited to the areas where the power went out — Jakarta and West Java — but spread to the whole of Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi.

Smartphone users in Melbourne and Sydney experience 4G Download Speeds 15 Mbps slower during busy times

Opensignal analyzed 4G Download Speeds experienced by our users in Australia’s two most populous cities — Melbourne and Sydney. We noticed a consistent trend in both cities: our users on all three of the country's main networks — Optus, Telstra, and Vodafone — experienced a wide range of 4G Download Speeds during different hours of the day likely due to congestion, with download speeds decreasing through the day.

5G smartphone users experience 111.8 Mbps average download speed

5G is here, but how fast is it? In the first country to see widespread 5G adoption, South Korea, Opensignal’s analytics reveals the average download speed of 5G smartphone owners is 111.8 Mbps or 48% faster than users with comparable recent 4G flagship smartphones1 and 134% higher than other 4G smartphone users. These metrics will likely improve as 5G becomes more mainstream and the early 5G technology matures over the coming months.

In the last year, the download speeds experienced by smartphone users in the US have improved little, rising from 17 Mbps to 21.3 Mbps between the first quarter of 2018 and the same period in 2019. There’s lots of room for improvement but only a new technology like 5G is likely to lead to a step-change improvement in the mobile network experience.

Multiple operators across the globe hit simultaneously by Ericsson network outage

OpenSignal has identified that December 6th’s mobile network outage hit multiple operators at the same time across the globe.

Analyzing availability data for 2G, 3G and 4G mobile technologies across hundreds of networks, we found three operators where smartphone users experienced a significant and sudden drop in LTE availability: Mobifone in Vietnam; SoftBank in Japan; and O2 in the UK.

The Connected London initiative was launched in the U.K. capital this summer, an ambitious scheme which hopes to drive improvement through digital technology and data. Part of the plan includes tackling mobile broadband "notspots" – where the signal is extremely weak or patchy, or users can't connect to a network at all.
