Swiss mobile roaming experience significantly differs from the domestic one

In this new analysis, Opensignal has compared the roaming experience of our smartphone users on Switzerland’s mobile networks — Salt, Sunrise, and Swisscom, over the course of 180 days starting on October 1, 2022. We looked at the quality of roaming services seen by our Swiss users traveling abroad to neighboring countries — Austria, France, Germany, and Italy. We also analyzed the experience of roamers from these markets when they use their phones on Switzerland’s networks — and how it compares to the experience of Swiss domestic users.

Satellite services will help with no mobile signal areas in Germany

In the last few months, several industry players have announced plans to support satellite connectivity on smartphones. Opensignal has previously looked at how much time our users spent with no signal across 100 global markets — including regional analysis of Canada and the U.S, where Apple initially introduced its iPhone 14 emergency satellite service in November. 

Swisscom users had the lowest no signal time and the fastest download speeds in Swiss ski resorts

For skiers, having good mobile service is essential, be it in emergency situations or simply when sharing their pictures and videos on the go from the slope. Ahead of the ski season, Opensignal has analyzed the mobile network experience in the 100 biggest ski resorts in Switzerland. We found that Swisscom users had the fastest overall speeds and 5G Download Speed in the ski resorts and they spent significantly less time with no signal than our Salt and Sunrise users.

Users in Austria see a better 5G experience in urban areas than in rural ones

In our latest analysis, we compared the network experience of our Austrian smartphone users when they connected to mobile data services in urban and rural areas. Our study shows that users in Austria’s urban areas had significantly better mobile network experience than those in rural areas. They enjoyed faster download speeds, while also remaining connected to mobile networks for a higher amount of time. However, the differences were not always statistically significant at an operator level.

Lower signal strength impacts the Swiss 5G experience

In our new analysis, Opensignal has observed that our smartphone users in Switzerland experienced worse signal strength when connected to 5G networks than users in neighboring countries — Germany, France and Italy. Also, we found a link between the quality of mobile signal strength and average 5G download speeds: the worse the signal strength, the slower the speeds.
