Benchmarking the 5G Experience — Asia Pacific — March 2022

In the latest Opensignal update on the 5G mobile network experience across Asia Pacific South Korea impressively tops the chart for all three measures of speed: 5G Download Speed, 5G Peak Download Speed and 5G Upload Speed. South Korean users were the only ones in the region to enjoy average 5G download speeds over 300 Mbps, in fact their speeds reached an astonishing 438 Mbps.

The Smartphone Experience Shift from 4G to 5G

On March 8, 2022 Apple announced a new 5G version of the iPhone SE — its cheapest iPhone — that will replace an older 4G-only SE model, first released in 2020. Notably, Apple prioritized including 5G and the modern A15 chipset over other potential enhancements such as adding Face ID or multiple rear cameras.

Opensignal’s data shows that short-term variations in average mobile data consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic correlated with variations in our users’ average Download Speed Experience across multiple countries. In part, this is because other ways of improving capacity such as additional wireless spectrum, could not be brought into use quickly in most countries to help with changed mobile usage.
